I'm right there with you guys as well. For me, this album doesn't have a clear cut song that is better than the rest. I would say the best song would be around top 30 Metallica or so....

@Titan: there are a few standouts here that I come back to quite a bit, such as Screaming Suicide, You Must Burn, Lux Aeterna, Crown of Barbed Wire, and Inamorata. But yeah, most of this album is in the solid 3-3.5 range

As this settles in, it's definitely bottom third Metallica for me. Death Magnetic crushes this, as does the first half of Hardwired. I've already shaven a half point off of my rating. Still a very enjoyable listen, but I'm not really craving any of these individual songs.

I think I was being too cynical reading Lux Aeterna as being about Metallica fans having a great time at a Metallica show- it definitely is about that to a point, but it's just as much about Metallica having a great time at a Metallica show, and that enthusiasm for the legacy they've built and the ways they matter to people is actually really nice to hear expressed in song at this point in their career
