i mean its pretty simple. this is death metal in the same way celtic frost is black metal. the attitude and all the little influences that would come together later are there, but both are still clearly just heavy thrash.

also this has a track called death metal so thats pretty sweet.

"SBG is clearly far more dm, I don't get how this is even a debate"

See, I've never understood the argument for SBG being the first "pure" dm album though. Yeah, it's more dm than this, but still extremely thrashy all the same. As far as I'm concerned, the first pure dm full-length was Altars of Madness. So in other words, this was the album that first connected the dots, and Altars was the first one to discard the majority of the thrash influence

to my ears sbg and altars are about the same level of thrashiness.

not to mention that leprosy was out a full six months before altars and that album is pure 100% death metal.

calling venom's black metal a black metal release just by virtue of its title is just as senseless

this album is thrash vox, thrash drumming, thrash riffs. SBG is when the instrumentation becomes less recognizable as thrash and that's a fine enough cutoff point. this thing though is straight goddamn thrashm

altars is well beyond the cutoff point

yeah tbh venom was probably a better example for black metal but celtic frost is just as influential to the genre.

the one that always confounds me is bathory because they sounded like pure black metal all the way back in like 85 which is wild.
