Whole album is like that for me. So well paced that it really doesn't feel like 60+ minutes.

The perfect band member is the guy you can work with. They're both good vocalists, but Spencer is clearly the better vocalist for the band.

"Also if talking is too much of an effort on tour then you're probably singing wrong."
Singing in this style is always unhealthy, so of course he would do it 'wrong'. Not talking at all is pretty radical though

Spencer and Devy and Akerfeldt and whoever all do it too, but also do the meet and greets and whatever. It's important to take care of you voice, but that involves rest and diet and exercise. Refusing to talk is just a prima Donna move.

And side bar: Spencer's still getting better as a vocalist. So clearly he's better for the band than Barretto was.

i never really minded spencer as a vocalist aside from my first few listens of PIII (which was the first time i heard any periphery stuff aside from "Blood Eagle") but with Juggernaut and repeat listens of PIII i got more used to it
that said i think he has definitely improved on this album, both from a screamed/clean vox side. even looking at just "Reptile", goddamn.

Okay I’m done spending time with this. The good tracks are REALLY good (Garden In the Bones, It’s Only Smiles, and Satellites), but the rest of the album just offers nothing to me. Reptile and Blood Eagle are the epitome of boring. Follow Your Ghost and CHVRCH BURNER suck. Crush is fucking TERRIBLE. Sentient Glow is an okay track, but doesn’t shine at all until the last minute, which is just a shame.

Chvrch Bvrner has some gnarly ass drums.
Sentient Glow might have grown to be my favorite on here. Probably bc I love Haunted Shores to death.

I really wanna like these guys, as I absolutely loved them when I was in high school, but just doesn’t click anymore

These guys have some resilient voices tbh, but that doesn't mean anything.
Devy was told by the doctors to dial back the scream or his voice would be toast. He once said hus singing is done by pure force.
Akerfeldt is a similar case, he stepped away from doing it + he got worse.
Spencer himself said his singing style was damaging his voice, but he liked doing it his way so he didn't stop.
I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, but the singer pays a price for this and people should know that imo

Do you prefer this version of Sentient Glow over Barretto's version? Cos I don't, at least not at the moment.

Metal vocalists of all styles pay a price, especially if they're singing wrong. That's why so many '80s metal vocalists sounded like shit by the 2000s. But, on the other hand watch any vocal coach reaction to a Devin Townsend performance. They always note how effortlessly he does the screaming. The dude has learned to take care of his voice despite constant performing recording and talking.

I prefer Spencer's but maybe if Chris's had the vocal layering that Spencer's version has I would lean towards Chris's version

These videos are pretty bad, because these guys will never point out the flaws of the singers, because they would get blowback by the fans. Instead they'll tell you anything you want to hear, even if it's far away from the truth.
The bar for singing on YT hangs veeeery low tbh. I'm not exaggerating. Most of these people just pander to their audiences.
Check out Zach Ansley for analyzes based in academia. He did two videos in Devin, the first (and more interesting one) is pretty old though. His explanations are coherent with the stuff my voice teachers told me.
Especially Devin Townsend is not a singer with healthy technique

There's one that did a video on Five finger death punch and she clearly didn't like it but didn't say anything negative to pander to the fans

The doctors said otherwise and I'm sure they're more competent than most voice coaches on YT
