The collab with Kenny is WAAAAY better than that somewhat mediocre Zuu tape he put out last year. Kenny has been really killing it lately with his collabs with Greedo, Vince Staples, Rico Nasty etc.

I could listen to a good beat happily without vocals but the other wha around/acapella would sound like a delirious hobo muttering to themselves, or a psychotic meth fiend in the case of Denzel.
Obviously when both compliment eachother it’s elevated to a new level.
And modern rap is done with much more respect to the beat e.g ad libs and melodic hooks, given the importance of atmosphere. It took me too long to realise it wasn’t just the result of laziness or lack of skill tbh

Everyone check sdotbraddys debut, denzels feature is dope
|

The beat is just 1 element and people act like it's the most important thing in rap music. Good beats elevate a song no fucking doubt, I mean just look at Nujabes stuff, but Idk why people are making it seem like without a good beat all rap is just acapella wtf? Samples, instruments, synths... They exist in rap
|
| |
Well I (and I thought everyone else in existence) use the term beat loosely to describe everything besides the vocals so I don’t have to say “this beat + synth + strings + sample + additional instruments is dope”
|
| |
The beat is just as important as the rapper. Yea you can rap your ass off but if you're doing it over mediocre production then why should people care?

lol i thought beat was a global term to refer to prod+samples+instrumentals.
|
| |
I thought it meant, you know... The beat, I mean why would you refer to a sample you love as a good beat?

because it's a broad term, same way one uses "instrumentals" to refer to the parts of a song that aren't vocals.

Speaking of dope beats check this banger

"I thought it meant, you know... The beat, I mean why would you refer to a sample you love as a good beat?"
yeah I only just realized like a year ago that when people say "beat" in hip hop, they're actually talking about 90% of the song and not just the beat. It's dumb as shit because then what am I supposed to call the actual beat itself? the beat's beat? fuckin wank ass shit. just say instrumental like a goddamn adult
|
| |
If you can’t accept that beat = everything minus vocals you’re a pedantic dickhead tbh

From Wikipedia:
"Instrumental hip hop is hip hop music without vocals. Hip hop as a general rule consists of two elements: an instrumental track (the "beat") and a vocal track (the "rap"). The artist who crafts the beat is the producer (or beatmaker), and the one who crafts the rap is the MC (emcee)."
|
| |
Yeah idk that seems kind of vague/confusing to me. Like butt said, what do you call the actual beat? I tend to isolate these things not to be pedantic but rather to be specific. Referring to every musical element in a song as a beat is too vague when describing what you like about a song. When we talk about something like rock music or classical or w.e we discuss individual instruments, "that's a really cool guitar riff". When I hear a cool sample in a rap song I usually consider it in context with the beat but I don't consider it itself a beat.

yeah exactly. I'll use whatever terminology the world tells me to I guess but it's just confusing/misleading at best
