Sowing - I'm not so much judging these albums on their merits as much as just saying 'out of headphones out of mind' esp with pop
if it's 7 years old will anyone remember/still be listening?
people will still be listening to Radiohead...or Kendrick...or new Tool gawd help us.

I personally think one shouldn't make AOTD lists before the decade is even over.
Give it at least 2 years for albums that dropped in 2018-19 to get that perspective.

Doof - oh inevitably. I agree that time isn't kind to everything, especially pop. maybe Janelle Monae as an example?
the thing is most staff (despite popular perception) do actually take their roles semi-seriously, and a lot of us are already re-listening to albums from '10, '11, '12, etc in preparation. so unless it literally hasn't aged well (as opposed to just being forgotten about, which are two separate things), then old albums - pop or otherwise - should still stand just as much of a chance as newer records. it's best to try to curb recency bias.

also with regards to giving it time, we're probably going to be in the middle of the pack. we won't rush out our decade list in December like many publications gunning for the clicks will (ahem, P4K, CoS), but we're not gonna wait 2 years either. For reference, the 2000-2009 decade list was posted in June 2010, so expect a similar timeline here. Think summer 2020.

Another point: longevity isn't the primary factor on which I'm ranking albums on my decade list. I'd much rather go with "intensity of connection," how hard I fell for a record. I'll openly admit that most of the albums in my top ten I haven't listened to regularly since 2016 or so. They were perfect for a certain stage of my life but I don't actively need to hear them anymore.

that's nice that you do that, it's smart. I feel AOTD lists, especially when they are published as a collective and not as an individual, shouldn't reflect personal taste first, as in most AOTY lists, but be the result of a discussion and a reflection about what defined the decade, beyond liking it or not.
Like, I really didn't like Blonde. But denying it's a trend setter, for its genre at least, would be foolish. But that's the kind of perspective one gets from the album coming out almost 4 years ago now. On the other hand, it's always fun to play prophet and hypothesize what will be the albums that will remain relevant and defy the pass of time.

Just responding to people saying this would def make the staff top 100 - not a stigma
Vampire Weekend for sure might suffer as they're really out of fashion now
I think Joanna Newsom will be ok as she's one for 'serious muso's and I doubt people will forget about her totally or feel she's in need of reappraising in light of trends
