the 'if some other artist...' argument is a far stretch. i don't know of any small artist that would have the audacity and ambition to pull out a 80 min piano rock record out of thin air, release a project so large with no traction to be going off from. this project is uniquely josh tillman's.

clearly you've never dived into the depths of bandcamp

i've cleared a fat rage so far ye

Agreed with dream here, in fact that "if it were another artist" argument almost always makes no sense.
Just read the p4k review and I'll concede it's definitely pretty mixed for a 7.6. In fact it does read more like a 6.5

lol i have a lot actually, there's ridiculously long releases, but only of field recordings paulstretched to audacity's limits, inconsequential shit with no musical merits.

the "if any other artist" argument is almost always single ply toilet paper thin
the problem with it is that its not any other artist

I'm very conflicted on Two Wildly Different Perspectives because while it has one of my favorite instrumentals on the album I have to admit the lyrics on it are kinda cringey

The Pitchfork review is bad in my opinion because it reads like they're reviewing Tillman the man and not the album.

^^literally all fjm fans seem capable of doing at this point
the thing is that regardless of whether or not he's a douche he still also makes very bad music
except for 3 very excellent songs

That's been my issue with him in the past. The whole schtict works against him pretty significantly if you aren't into his music.
|

being notorious for having a shtick as a musician at all is pretty fucking stupid yeah

Being a douchebag is considered a schtick now?
I thought a schtick was like, sticking needles in your dick while singing or having a small clone of yourself shot with a cannon to the skies on your shows.

Much like Honeybear, album improves exponentially with each listen.

this album was one of the biggest growers for me in a while. My first 2 or even 3 listens I was pretty disappointed, especially considering how much I enjoyed ILYH. Went back to to give this a try yesterday after needing a break from DAMN. and wanting something more relaxed. Ended up listening through several times and my opinion changed pretty drastically.

Shtick aside, it's enjoyable music.
Edit: Lol just saw that this rose from a 3.05 to a 3.11 on RYM over the weekend

Took me 5 or so spins to get passed the length and arrangements for this to really grab a hold of me, there isn't a track I dislike.
