Trying way too hard to have the edgy opinion. There is a ridiculous amount of depth and exploration to the songs. They don’t sound anything like the bands you mentioned either. Only bands I hear when I listen to the new album are Gorod and Spawn, which is outstanding company to be in.

Deviant Process are good, but they tailor their music to the “meaningful songwriting tech and NO WANK!!!!” crowd, which is so cringe.

“Poor songwriting” is just the phrase people use to attempt to objectify their opinion and give it more weight. In reality it’s absolutely meaningless because everyone has a different idea of what constitutes interesting song structure.

"Trying way too hard to have the edgy opinion."

C'mon dude lol, it's just how I feel about it. It's no fucking competition.

I hear Gorod as well, there's an affinity with Gorod in a lot of Quebec tech death of the past 10 years, including those other bands.

I'm with you this one DePlazz, I have your very same complaints about First Fragment, even though the new one is a bit better than this one in every aspect.

The new one is plenty interesting to me, although it feels like I've barely scratched the surface as there's so much to unpack. It's a lot to take in all at once, yet already I feel there are enough unique segments and their sound; whilst consistent, doesn't descend into homogeny. The specific parts will likely become even more distinctive as I spend more time digesting it.

I want their guitar skills god dammit

Also I can't believe Gorod is actually from France, and not Quebec, how very hoity-toity of them

Agree, and I would not use that phrase for that purpose. But some things can be objectified, e.g. the frequency with which a band uses certain types of minor scales, chord progressions etc. If the same schemes are repeated often enough within an album, there's objective reason to experience it as less varied and adventurous.

Did you study music by any chance DePlazz?

Not professionally, no. Doing a bit of self-study every once in a while though. I'm a self-taught guitar player, and when something bugs me in playing or listening to music, I dig into the theoretical stuff to try and translate my intuitive grasp into an official terminology of some sort.

Dasein was almost pathologically committed to using basic harmonic minor progressions with very little chord substitution or modal mixture. The new album moves away from that substantially, but ultimately it's still not very harmonically adventurous. I don't mind that, but I can see why you might.
