whenever he says "i can't give everything away" i can't help but tear up and think about how he kept his cancer a secret from everyone

Is that what he means in the song? If so then that's one of the most profound things I've ever encountered in music, addressing his own mortality in the wake of the album's release and his passing.

well it seems like during these sessions he had pretty much accepted the fact that he probably wasn't gonna be around much longer
bowie stayed pretty private in his later years, but i can't help but feel like he was trying to give his fans some type of message about his ill health...

Maybe but I think he was demoing songs for another album too, so he might've thought he had time to make more music.

that is true, but sadly those demo songs came about pretty late.
I remember reading a interview with the producer and pretty much bowie thought he was going to have a lot more time than he had assumed and spoke about wanting to do one more album. Very shortly after though is when his health took a turn for worst...
When he made Blackstar I think he went in feeling it could very well be his last album, even if he potentially wanted to do more.

The last song certainly gives that impression, gets me pretty emotional every time I hear it.

"What do I know"
Was that reference to DJ accidental or intentional?

Agreed, the two songs before really set them up nicely by being so different.

there were three songs from the Blackstar sessions and also five demos that Bowie recorded afterward that he meant to use as material for another album. The songs were developed enough to a point where after he died, Tony Visconti and co. said they'd see the light of day eventually.

Strange choice of album to skip but at least you got there in the end :D
Top 10 of 2016?

Doof I didn't listen to this back in January as I wanted to work through the Bowie back catalogue (or at least the essentials) first, alas I only got to Station, Ziggy, and Hunky. Eventually I just figured I needed to have heard this before making my 2016 list so went for it anyways.
Most likely top 10 yes, it's a definite strong 4-4.5 after one listen.

Yeah that's what I've read in articles but it doesn't seem that any have been released publicly yet, besides the ones from the Lazarus play.
