^for whatever reason I conceptualized that as taking ~gaze~ fluid and blowing digitized, IDM air into it to form bubbles of music and that is exactly the vibe this gives me

just being covered in bubbles of idm filled gaze

Ya that's an interesting question boney. I would maybe give a slight edge to IDM over gaze, but as space said , that could just be due to the fact that the idm elements are just louder and more conspicuous

So what's the IDM to shoegaze ratio on this thing? interesting and also a bit complicated question, bud. my short answer - between 60:40 and 65:35, idm's advantage. but there are a few cases to be made.
if you're more of a shoegaze purist, you can make a claim that there isn't a whole lot shoegaze on this, and you could be correct! why? because a lot of this isn't explicitly shoegaze. only tracks 10,11,12, and 4 are indisputably shoegaze songs. shoegaze is an (alt) rock genre, typified by it's use of heavy overlapping guitars to create textures and sound walls - as such, it would seem that in order for something to be explicitly shoegaze, you would need guitars, often many of them. but this album likes to blur that line. tracks tekka and dedicated have absolutely no guitars in them, however, they very clearly try to evoke the same sounds and textures that shoegaze uses : "same vibes/different means." these songs try to emulate shoegaze through idm.
on the flipside, there are only 4 "rock" songs on this album, with only 2 of them being absent of idm. idm dominates every single song otherwise. even if it's just idm trying to be something else (like glitch and pop!). unlike the shoegaze, all of the idm tracks are legitimate and by-the-books idm [though many are also "pop" songs too].

so i guess that's one way you can describe this album - an idm album that seems to want to be something else. idk if that's good or not tho. :/
but idm definitely still has the edge imo. by how much depends various functions that you have to define first.
"what is shoegaze and what isn't?" : "what is idm and what isn't?" so forth.

That's a very interesting breakdown Cyg. The reason I asked the question is that I'm more interested in shoegaze than I am IDM. The album sounds really intriguing so I will definitely check it out at some point but given that the IDM elements are more prominent than the shoegaze I think I'll try some straight-up IDM first to get a better grip on the genre before trying this.

I personally don't agree that IDM has a dominate edge in a song like Sept, and every song aside from maybe Tekka has huge huge huge shoegaze influence. Its just less apparent because its like putting equal parts water and gasoline into a glass. But thats just me.
PS I am clueless when it comes to electronic sub genres

if you like shoegaze youll probably dig this even if you arent so big on idm

Ryus I don't even really know what IDM is beyond a very abstract sense derived from the name so it's prob best I hold off for now.

idm is a stupid label for a multitude of subgenres/styles that share little in common

tbh boney this album marriages the two genres so well that liking one will lend the enjoyment of the other. its really interesting how at home they sound with eachother, I'd say give it a peep without doing any studying

spacedude, i neglected to mention this, but i would agree that damn near every song on here is influenced by shoegaze as well (particularly tekka tbh). also sept is one of the "rock" songs i was talking about.
