I see what you're saying Valk, Kozelek released a similar album last year but delivered it straight bordering on deadpan and he still got emotion to break through.
I think it's more a genre complaint you got there, this is a tearjerker in a similar way to Hospice or Electro-shock Blues - these albums lay it on thick but for me they deliver it without too much off putting cheese. I believe there can be good tearjerkers and unforgivably hammy ones

It makes sense that I am not too big on Hospice either then. I agree that C&L is fairly good at expressing this kind of mood, if anything I find it lulling, comforting but never emotional or hard-hitting
