i had no idea i had this as a 3 actually, it's grown on me a lot since i first rated it
So i really appreciate the musicality on this, reminds me of aquemini-era outkast with more of a parliament/funkadelic/flying lotus influence, and thundercat's bass playing is incredible. It's a big step up from GKMC where i think the beatwork was unimaginative at best
However i just feel lyrically it's trying to hard to make a GRAND EPIC STATEMENT a lot of the time, especially on the closer, which sounds basically like the kind of pseudo-intellectual shit me and my friends chat when we're stoned. Just because kendrick is angry and discussing big issues (laudable as that is) doesn't mean he's saying anything interesting or insightful about them.
Gonna raise my rating though because musically this is easily the best hip-hop record of the year and i have to appreciate KL's lyrical ambition if not his execution
