@Lead: Ayyyyy glad you're giving it another chance, so much I love on it (especially the Macabre and Despair remakes). As I've said before Macabre to Marrow it's so inconsistent nothing raises to a great album for me but live so many incredible moments are by those albums. The recent Mode Vulgar and Kisou shows are one example of that.
@Pleb: Top 10 Dir track for me, that riff is undeniable.

@Calc Okay I'll definitely have to sift through some more of their live recordings. I've only seen their last 3 album's material live (and the final).
What are the tracks you're talking about Havok? I'll have to give them another listen but I don't think I can sit through the nu metal stuff :/
EDIT: And calc I spent some time digging through Unravelling yesterday. Okay it's dope, I don't know what I was on back when I first listened to it. Then again I also didn't care too much for DSS at that time so it might've just needed a couple more listens. I was introduced to this band via Uro / Gauze which is why I liked Arche instantly. The more metal stuff had to grow on me, but it's definitely doing just that!

For Kisou: Mushi, Embryo, Undecided, Kigan, 24ko Cylinders, Gyakujou Tannou Keloid Milk and the original versions of the two tracks remade on Unraveling
For Vulgar: Red... [em], Amber, Sajou no Uta, Kasumi, Asunaki Koufuku
Kisou really doesn't have too much of a nu metal sound. However, I prefer Vulgar as an album since it's more focused and flows better.

I really think I have to go back and listen to all of their older stuff. Maybe I'm in a different head space because I just popped on Embryo and its really cool so far (I didn't catch it at all the first time...). Thanks for the reccs!

No problem! Band can be a grower on the simpler material too.

@Lead: Believe me even some of their most uninspired tracks of their career, Nu Metal or otherwise have had incredible performances. For example this from Tour Vulgar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb_PDBFT2YI
Also yay, glad you like Unraveling more now.

Yeah they're definitely growing on me as a whole haha. Spent a 3 hour bus ride and 2 hour car ride listening to DSS. I'm starting to think it's a better album than Arche but Arche has better songs (imo). Still not sure though!
I'll check out the live vid as soon as I'm home!

DSS has my fav song by the band (Beelzebub) so I can't agree there lol, but Kukoku is def top 5.

Nah, it's not even top 5 on Arche.

Had the iPod on shuffle at work yesterday and Phenomenon came on; still blows my mind even now.

Yep, everything about it is amazing, from the brilliant guitar pay-offs over the brooding atmosphere up to one of the most beautiful climaxes such a dark song has ever had

I have to say, I think this is their most reverb heavy album or at least it sounds to me like they used a lot of reverb in the production of this album. For better or for worse (I think it's for the better), it helps gives off a very dreamy sound especially in the softer passages and it helps bring to those moments much more atmosphere than without it.

@Acme Definitely has the most atmosphere in my mind (partially due to the amount of reverb on the guitars). Agreed on the dreamy soundscapes.
@Calc and Havok Kukoku is one of my favs on Arche but definitely not my favorite (I prefer Behind a Vacant Image and Kaishun for sure). DSS feels a bit more complete but doesn't have as many standouts (but that could be due to the consistency). I don't know if I have a favorite on DSS yet but so far I've been going back to Yokusou, Diabolos, and Vanitas a lot. I think one of the riffs in Kaishun is a reference to a riff in Diabolos.
On the whole though, I think Uroborous is my favorite (with my favorite song) and DSS / Arche are fighting for number 2.

Why does no one like Kukoku as much as me? ;-;
If your fav is Vinushka then I reserve the right to call you a basic bitch :P

It's probably Ware Yami Tote? ;)
Best on here are Rinkaku, Phenomenon, and Behind a Vacant Image for me (no order)

Rinkaku is basically the perfect song. Out of the 7 times it's been performed live 5 of them have been mindblowing 5/5 performances.

I think a lot of metal bands share the problem that most of their calm songs sound the same, but that's never been the case with Dir En Grey, Rinkaku being the best example of that imo. Such a unique and eerie song. But, like I said, the other two songs I mentioned are just on the same level imo

Yeah it's one of the best thing about the band. All of their ballad/calm songs are so different.

Vinushka is great but its far from my fav. I prefer Kukoku to Vinushka. Kukoku is top 5-7 Diru songs for me (3rd fav from Arche). Ware Yami Tote is my favorite Diru song though! I get chills every time I hear it.
Rinkaku is soooooooo good. My favorite Diru is their alt metal/rock stuff not gonna lie.
