It's really close for me, like a 4.7 if I could use staff ratings
There are only two very slight problems I have with the album: the fact that I think Thomas Haake should have played instead of using the Drumkit from Hell, and that Obsidian probably didn't need to go all the way out to 8 1/2 minutes. The original 4-minute version was just fine imo

I get that. But I also get that this is a 5.0. A very 5.0y 5.0.

Tbf, I do have this as a 5 on ProgArchives where you can't use .5 increments, if that's any consolation :]

I've come a long way from the 1.5 review I did of Obzen back in 2013. Very glad the 'shuggah grew on me so much over time :D

Absolutely. When they click, there's no way back and no-one quite like them. Truly addictive music. Those grooves!!!!!

For the longest time, the biggest criticism driving my dislike of the band was the lack of emotion and that everything sounded like a repetitive assembly line of riffs and nothing else. But I was missing the appeal entirely, in the sense that it's all about what you find in the repetition. It gets a lot more interesting when you intently count out the beats, especially when trying to predict when Jens is gonna come back in after an instrumental passage.
Plus, the weird alien atmosphere in the jazzy leads by Fredrik. Gotta love that too

For sure, following the groove is what this is all about. They're so good at constructing these delicious patterns. And "when Jens is gonna come back in after an instrumental passage" this too 100%. Jens often gets forgotten, despite him adding so much to that groove.
One of my fave Meshuggah moments has everything to do with his vox, and the way they're colliding and working together with this groove. It is on this album, on Closed Eye Visuals, the part where he says:
A twirling visual overload
Explosions of terror and
Beauty
Colors
Of fear and pain within
Clash into
Unanything

People often forget that Jens is a damn good guitarist in his own right, so he definitely has a good sense of rhythm and precision when following the other bandmates. I kinda wish he'd play guitar again and make a Meshuggah a triple threat guitar-wise, but it's what it is, I guess
