uhh

why isn't it nostalgia? i already said it's the sounds of the 80s. i definitely feel nostalgic listening to this..
|
| |
So not only is it nostalgic, but it makes you long for time you weren't even alive. This must be some real transcendental shit I didn't pick up when I listened to it.
|
| |
it's possible to feel nostalgia vicariously. you could feel the sentiment for a time that precedes your own - a "grass is always greener" sort of effect
|
| |
You can't really have a "grass is always greener" effect without experiencing and knowing all the variables input into the system. The feeling you are describing is idealism, like a different time period would take all of your problems away, which is what the effect actually is anyway.
|
| |
or possibly people feel things from albums that you don't because people hear albums differently
|
| |
so maybe you could describe what arcade and gyro are feeling as some sort of retrospective idealism? it's difficult for me to argue their case since I don't really know exactly what they mean, but is that sorta a fair way to put it?
|
| |
I think that's perfectly fine. But trying to describe nostalgia after such a short period of time doesn't help anyone's credibility. It puts your insecurity out on display for one.
|
| |
it's difficult for me to argue their case since I don't really know exactly what they mean, but is that sorta a fair way to put it?
Yeah. They perceive that time period was better when it was really just different. Both problems and solutions differed.
|
| |
Why is perceiving something different from what you perceive insecure? That's just some straight up narcissistic shit, bro

Anyone can feel nostalgic for any time period tho. I'm a huge fan of all the expatriate stuff from the French 1920's, and anytime I read gatsby I long to back to the idyllic late 20's. Is that not nostalgia?
|
| |
No, it's an opinion just like his feelings on the album.
|
| |
Is that not nostalgia?
No, that's imagery. You're only getting what the author tells you about the period.
|
| |
It's your sonic wayback machine, eh?
|
| |
someguest are you being intentionally obtuse? my parents were heavily into 80s music and movies. this isn't uncommon. i grew up with it

"This was always a really cool sounding album for me but never the definitive classic some have found it to be. Lately I've been listening to Saturdays=Youth and preferring that by a slight margin."
Saturdays=Youth I think is a wonderful album, but to me, this album is the best. It flows very well and has a very wonderful ambient atmosphere that none of the others capture quite as well. Seems like a more polished and mature version of Before the Dawn Heals Us. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite albums. A sampler of different sounds placed tastefully over 2 discs, imo. Listening to this album just feels like watching your favorite movie ever. Very theatric, very welcoming, sends you through many different emotions, and just never gets old. It's just a very nice and mellow adventure.. and "Klaus I Love You" would probably be my all-time favorite song if it were longer.

yeah this is my favorite too
i actually really dig the new track. it's no midnight city but it's fun

This > Dead Cities = Before the Dawn = Saturdays > M83 > Digital Shades, imo
I do think new album may be hit or miss but I'm curious to see where it lands
