i don't at all buy the argument that this album has no focus. it wanders somewhat but only because the band is so careful to move between sounds over the course of minutes rather than seconds. the entire album is definitely uniform in tone despite changes in style. if anything, i would fault them for not taking enough chances, since i think the demo was definitely more adventurous.

but from the sound of the new track, they have really focused more on a straight up screamo/bm sound for sunbather than on this one, which is heavy on the post-rock sound. let's just hope the whole thing is as good as that single.

agreed the guitar tone is immaculate i wish it was a little more bm and it could go without two interlude tracks but their songwriting solidified a lot

the songs are more composed this time. not so focused on long strings of tremolo guitar melodies. it's just riffier.

and the vocals holy shit.

I could never get into Kalmah. I only tried with Swamplord and thought it blew. I personally think the new Deafheaven record is the best thing I've heard in years. It's basically Envy meets Slowdive meets black metal which are three of my favorite things.

yeah i don't like how sunbather feels a lot more fruity and optimistic ITS CALLED BLACK METAL FOR A

REASON JEEZ

and the vox are good and all but fuck me listening to this dude use the same scream through a fifteen

minute song is ridiculous at least change pitch or something to match your guitars

A lot of my favorite black metal songs I find to be very optimistic even if that wasn't their intent. Like I find Tortured By Solitude by Coldworld and Towards the Depths by Woods of Desolation to be whole heartedly uplifting listening experiences.

edit: I'm also used to the monotone vocals. The dude from Envy only has one barking scream to his repertoire

this is the type of dumb thing a hipster like me would say but i feel like that sort of reaction is
far too predicated upon genre restrictions than anything found in the music itself -- if you just
don't like "optimistic"-sounding music or the way deafheaven approach that style that's fine and
probably anything else is fine but if it's bothering you because it's a "black metal album" that
doesn't feel like one should then just think of it in some other way

i.e., and for some reason i can visualize this idea in my head but can't put it into words, music
should precede tags rather than vice versa

then again to assume you haven't already thought of this is probably jerkish. goodbye world
