also

the n-word's history, it's not like there's a class dedicated to that

yes there is it's called social studies some places, history in others. i think your point is rather that this specific history isn't universally taught. however, there's also another type of class that you take to learn English to begin with. i doubt many teachers teach you the 'n' word and then say "go use that a bunch, it's totally cool"

The scale of white musicians using the N-word goes thusly, from least to most egregious:

Bob Dylan
Dead Kennedys
Elvis Costello using it in a song
John Lennon
Björk
Elvis Costello drunkenly screaming it in a Holiday Inn
idk Phil Anselmo probably

I don't know enough about Patti Smith to say for sure, let's put her in between Lennon and Bork for now

And let's not forget the wonderful Pattie Smith. "Rock n Roll Nigger" is a song. lmao 20th century white musicians would want to mean well with the word so badly, but I'd say they really should have just not tried.

Edit: Ars beat me.

The worst thing about that song is that Marilyn Manson covered it to look cool

"at least the point he was making of women being oppressed was true and valid"

The point he was *trying* to make. And maybe, but what about like, BLACK women?? They have to be women and black at the same damn time, and I'm sure Lennon didn't think of them once when he wrote that bullshit. lmao I want to ask him "Are black women just SUPER-niggers?" Idk dude, he could have just picked any other metaphor, EVERY other metaphor, and it would've been better.

Edit: Didn't know Manson did that but I'm simultaneously not even slightly surprised.

What if the white artist says it in a song where all of the other vocalists in the song are black (Ike Willis and Ray White) ?

Cuz like Frank Zappa falls in that category on the song You Are What You Is...

So like the line is a group vocal, and only one of the vocalists singing it is white? Imo the fact that there were actual black people in the studio with him, who presumably didn't object to the line, is worth something, at least

Then again I'm white so my perspective on the matter is probably not the most relevant

Yeah, Frank Zappa, Ike Willis, and Ray White all sing most of the song together, but when it gets to the N word, only Zappa says it...
