Yep. Tragic. He was an amazing vocalist in his prime.

He gets a lot of shit, but he was really good in his early days

Honestly Dream Theater have ruined themselves musically with their lineup choices. They had the perfect lineup here, then Moore left. Then they had Sherinian who was a damn good keyboardist and then they replaced him with Jordan Rudess who is probably the worst thing to ever happen to the band. Labrie's voice was shot, and then they kept him. Portnoy wanted a break (justifiably) but instead of listening to him they got Mangini who adds literally nothing to the band, leaving Petrucci and Rudess to power-trip literally everything the band does from now on. I'm not sure I can think of another band that has made SO MANY terrible decisions in regards to their lineup.

jordan rudess aint bad man, it's just the way he picks all the wrong keyboards and plays too much wankery. petrucci needs to shift his guitar tone away from generic metal. mike mangini is good, but he lacks creativity

I didn't notice just how much Rudess ruined the band tbh but you made a great point there

Rudess is incredibly talented. One of the most talented musicians I know of, actually. The guy has chops on the keys like no one else I've heard. But his approach to composition and soloing is completely tasteless. His style is all about showing off instead of adding something meaningful to the songs (something that Moore and Sherinian both did tremendously well). I truly believe that it was when he replaced Sherinian that things really started going downhill for these guys.

He's one of my favourite keyboardists ever for that exact reason. He was one of the main reasons why this and Awake are so magical.

well yea but scenes would be their best record with better production

Similar to Mangini's approach at composing. Yes, he is a monster behind the kit but he has no character and therefore nothing that makes his drumming truly stand out. His conpositions are bland and even mediocre.

I would consider Scenes their best if it had better production, better vocals, better keyboards and if this album didn't happen to exist.

Mangini just doesn't do anything creative in DT. He does what Petrucci tells him to do. Portnoy had his flaws but he was at least a strong-minded and inventive guy.

Pretty much, yeah. And now they're doing a tour performing it in full. Even if the tickets hadn't been so expensive, I still couldn't be bothered. I&W from the current incarnation of the band just feels very wrong to me.
I truly believe that it was when he replaced Sherinian that things really started going downhill for these guys.
Oh they did, sadly. Apart from some moments on Scenes, Rudess just doesn't do anything for me. Seeing as Moore left on his own accord, they should've stuck with Sherinian. I do actually enjoy quite a bit of what they did with Rudess, but Rudess has very little to do with that.
Mangini just doesn't do anything creative in DT. He does what Petrucci tells him to do. Portnoy had his flaws but he was at least a strong-minded and inventive guy.
Portnoy leaving did indeed only make it worse (and I also believe he absolutely had the right idea in taking a break). Again, though, even the first two they did with Mangini I don't consider to be that bad. They have their moments, but just feel so... lifeless.

Having been a fan for a decade, I pretty much agree with these thoughts. I don't think SC or BC&SL were so much better than Dramatic Turn or the s/t tho; these days I even prefer Dramatic Turn to everything else they've done since Octavarium tbh, barely.
I think it was more or less a gradual descent ever since Scenes. They should've taken a break like Portnoy had said, cause being on RR wasn't helping them too much musically. Mangini having his creativity pretty much stifled is such a missed opportunity as well.
The Astonishing is their weakest to date, but even that has a few great ideas scattered in there. Even though the band is at an all time low creatively, I don't think the situation is completely hopeless, but who knows.

it's admirable to have hope no matter what happens but i'm so done with this band by now

That's also easier for someone who gives a 3/5 rating to their best album haha, but yea I haven't been that invested in DT for a few years now.

Did Labrie really fuck his voice up after that incident? He sounds pretty good on A Change of Seasons (haven't listened to anything the band did after that tho)

LaBrie sounded great up to and including the 6 Degrees tour......was decent after that up until the time portnoy left, and has been rapidly declining since
