The only other album of his I've heard is Carrie and Lowell, and that one is definitely better than this.

Nah, that one is monotone “be sad please” drivel. This one has way more varied song compositions, even if it doesn’t work 100% of the time

Man of Metropolis rules, one of my favorites
also, album is far from a mess, sure there is a lot going on and it can be a bit scattered at points, but the sheer, massive scope of the album is what makes it work for me, there's so much to latch onto, dissect, and take in that each time you listen to this album, it's a different listening experience

Yea this has a lot of personality and maybe histrionic at times, but everything flows together well and the mix of styles works for the most part. C&L is his best, this a close second for me.

This is my favorite, followed by Age of Adz and C&L, but I'm not sure about the order of those anymore. Those three are his masterpieces for sure though, and as different as they could be.

Michigan and Seven Swans are his third and fourth best imo, then Age of Adz. I haven't heard the first two.

Michigan, Seven Swans, The BQE, and even The Avalanche are all contestants for fourth place for me ... ugh, I love this discography. At the moment, it's probably BQE.
Enjoy Your Rabbit is probably the worst thing he ever touched. Not too big on his Sisyphus stuff either though.

"John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is incredible

I used to love a lot of the songs here equally and it’s still an awesome album but I think “come on feel the Illinoise,” especially the second half, is the one that’s really stuck with me
|

Still so funny/weird that we have the two-album trace of a project that got abandoned so quickly, and that both albums are excellent despite in some way being marked (??) by failure
|

Carrie Lowell is great for what it is, but I don’t really get how people hold it as his best when it’s so minimal.
Tho maybe that’s just what he does best; John Wayne and Casimir Pulaski are two of my favs off this.
Feel the Illinoise is not only the best song he’s ever made tho, it’s one of the best songs ever period

its the same as a crow looked at me with mount eerie, it's an outpouring of grief and fragility
ofc thats different from his scattershot albums beforehand (which all work very well despite this) - but it maintains a constant harrowing atmosphere and has absolutely no filler
i still put this slightly above carrie, but carrie is easily his most well-crafted aand personal project imo

also enjoy your rabbit is a solid 4 and if anyone likes early animal collective, parts of it remind me of that kind of creative direction. way too long (you could half the runtime and it would be close to a 5) but very underrated (year of the ox is one of his best tracks)

it's the opposite of a crow looked at me though. "death is real, it's not for making into art" is the best argument i've read against carrie and lowell.

"“come on feel the Illinoise,” especially the second half, is the one that’s really stuck with me"
Best song here, agreed. Top 10 sufjan songs too.
"it's the opposite of a crow looked at me though. "death is real, it's not for making into art" is the best argument i've read against carrie and lowell."
i'm conflicted by this, because crow is definitely an artistic statement, whether it's trying to be or not. i don't think there's anything wrong with expressing death through the medium of song or film or anything pertaining to art. carrie and lowell does it beautifully. oftentimes death seems to be one of the best inspirations for great art

I'll take Carrie and Lowell over this or his other albums

i like carrie and lowell more as well, but this has some of his best material. come on, casimir, chicago, and ufo are among his best songs
