I agree. But that's a pretty respectable score nonetheless. Or did you have it at a 3.5 just now?

Hahaha no this has never been in 3.5 territory! Thing is with pretty much all good trip-hop except Mezzanine is that I'm very rarely blown away on first listen and it shows its worth through really satisfying repeat listens over time. I've been jamming this for years and it sounds better than ever, so should probably give it the love it deserves...

It was an absolute mind melter back in ‘94. Maxinquaye which followed later even more so. Funnily enough Mezzanine was the least mind melting upon release although the video for teardrop melted minds.

True that Johnny! The s/t was where I started, which is very difficult to get into, but all of their releases grew into the hardest 5s ever over the years. Band is stunning.
I've never been to big on Tricky Zak, and I love both Blue Lines and Protection more than Mezzanine. What other Tricky record could I try other than Maxinquaye (it's the only one I have)?

No! S/t isn't their worst, in each and every way it's as perfect as this. By the slightest of margins Third is their worst for me. Still a 4.5 though, band is that good.

To be fair a fair bit of trickys stuff after Maxinquaye is shite. Some amazing songs crop up though. Christiansands and Tricky Kid from pre millennium tension are bloody amazing. Still sound fresh as a daisy.

Hmm, I'll revisit Max and give those two a go then. You never know if they miraculously work for me this time!

Dark, sluggish and threatning not particularly great Sunday listening. Tricky Kid has to be turned up loud.

Hmm, I like my trip-hop jazzy like this or more hip-hop and soul based like early Massive. That might be why the Tricky dude didn't impress me as much. But times, they are a-changin', or so I've heard.
