Hammerheart is amazing, it's probably my fave even. Twilight is awesome too. First six are all worth it.

I agree with deadbitch, Viking metal does suck for the most part.

i think that is the wrong way to word it
a lot (most) of viking metal bands are cheesy as fuck
but some viking metal albums (nordavind) are really awesome

Yeah Bathory did a great job with their Viking albums. But I agree with the genre being very very very very cheesy most of the time.

Damn. The drumming on this is unforgivably bad

alright i was 3 songs in when I said that, thankfully it gets better. the back half of this album is a lot stronger overall. but yeah talk about boring, bland drumming in those opening tracks

The focus isn't on technicality for sure. Uncompromising, no nonsense first wave bm.

yeahh still though, two of those songs are literally just repetitive banging on the snare for 3 straight minutes with no variation whatsoever

Now you know how I feel about Menzingers guitarwork.
|

Album Rating: 3.5
that comparison would work if menzingers played one power chord for an entire song. argument invalid.
but also this could not be more apples to oranges so it ends now mr zilla

I'm not comparing the two artists. I just think their guitarwork is one of the most uncreative things in the genre - just like how you don't like the drumming here. I think that the drumming doesn't matter for the most part on this Bathory album because it's all about creating an evil atmosphere - and the vocals and guitars are at the forefront in that regard.

lyrics don't matter, drums don't matter....man, black metal is such an easy genre to impress you with! hardly takes any work at all

Album Rating: 4.5
It's all about crafting an image-evoking atmosphere when it comes to black metal. Vast and lush layers of harmonies that take you to places.
Lyrics are secondary to rock/metal anyways. Like I've said before, they maybe awesome but if the music is vapidly shit (like in the Menzingers' or any other sadboi pop punk band's case), then it's just shit.

have you ever considered that menzingers are also aiming to evoke certain images and feelings, and since almost every album of theirs has received vast critical acclaim, they have succeeded in doing so? everyone else is clearly hearing something you aren't. you can just say "it's not my thing" and be done with it
why are we still talking about menzingers

Because I was trying to present you with an example where we are listening to the same things but in different ways, which ultimately results in differing opinions.
