"I was arguing with silly metalheads recently about it so I just wanna bump in and remind everyone that this is in fact metalcore. K thx š

It was a dumb argument twenty years ago and it's dumb now.
Who fuckin' cares.

Breakdowns must equal metalcore. No breakdowns in thrash or death metal ;)

it's an argument about genre not morals or anything like that so I don't even understand the hostility to something being labeled "metalcore" unless you're still a big baby about "poser metal" for some reason. The opening to Laid to Rest is the biggest "'04 metalcore" sound ever. They're obviously groove metal but a whole lot of this is core.

I can understand calling them metalcore in the strictest sense, since thereās a bit of hardcore influence in their sound on the first few records, but calling them āā04 metalcoreā sort of belies the fact that their sound is a bit different than the standard 2nd wave melodic metalcore most of their peers were doing in the mid 00s. For starters, thereās a lot more Phrygian and blue/chromatic passing tones here than riffs that stick exclusively to melodic/harmonic minor. I do think they did quite a good job of synthesising characteristics of a few at that point disparate subgenres, and a lot of their wider appeal at the time was a direct result of that.

I mean we can talk about how much it rules instead of having a stupid debate about if it is/isn't metalcore lol.

it doesn't need to strictly sound like those other bands in the strictest sense tho, but that sound is enmeshed in their songwriting.

I never used to understood calling this band metalcore, to me they just never sounded like/felt like the other metalcore bands from the time ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
nowadays I would say they are predominantly "groove metal" (btw never liked this name, i think of it as slow thrash lol) but I can see metalcore as an additional descriptor. I still couldn't call them solely metalcore though hahah

not solely no but it's a significant aspect of their sound. Chimaira are a little more overtly core but it's the same with them.

Lamb of God and Chinaira always sounded pretty distinct from the other popular metalcore bands of that era (Killswitch, Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, etcā¦).
People sometimes label them as Groove Metal but that doesnāt really feel right either

I think the term back when was post-thrash. Or NWOAHM but Killswitch and All That Remains and them got thrown into that bucket too

I mean Chris Adler refers to them as a "speed metal" band on the Sacrament documentary.
