Wrapping up the third listen... I do like the last few songs but tracks 7-11 on here is maybe the weakest run on any of the MM stuff I've heard... Opening run is pretty spotty too.

I like 'Fly Trapped' and have a soft spot for 'Little Motel'
The flow of the first 6 tunes is quite addictive for me, I used to think 'Missed the Boat' was an absolute classic back in 2007 - not quite as keen on it now but it's still nice enough

Just put up track ratings on RYM for both albums if you want to see where I'm coming from.

The first track starts up a little shaky but I do like the second half. "Dashboard" is trying to be the same thing "Float On" was I guess but it has an oddly generic late-00s pop melody (we're talking top 40 pop). "Fire It Up" is ok, "Florida" is good but doesn't quite hang together. "Sensory" is great", "Boat" too, not a classic but one of the best here for sure. Takes a dive after that though... Hoping for some growth but I'm not too optimistic.
Listening to Good News now and idk, it immediately sounds better. The middle section of that one did grow on me a lot though so maybe that weak section on this one will as well. It just doesn't sound like the band is having a whole lot of fun on this one.

Also, would anybody know Johnny Marr was on this album if they didn't make a big deal about it?

Looks like the big differences between us on Good News are I like "Salty" (my fave on the album) and the last few tracks as well as the oddities of "Workday" and "Satin" a lot more. I've got Good News track rated on RYM too, check mine.

On "Bury Me With It" on Good News now and that seems to be the song they took the most from on this album, especially in the vocal style... Accordingly that's one of my least faves on News but it's better than a lot here, much hookier, more fun.
I also scanned the lyrics to this album on this past listen and they're definitely Isaac's weakest to that point.

Yeah, I never liked 'Salty' too much for some reason, always came across a bit insipid and indistinct for me melodically (or I might just not like those melodies I'm not sure) - I was surprised to hear it was a single and most people's favourite.
'Bukowski' is my top pick on 'Good News', and I really like 'Bury Me with It' so maybe that's why I like the style here too :/

"Bukowski" is my second fave. I don't really dislike anything on that, even "Dance Hall" has a certain charm to it. Either way though the first three albums are king, that's pretty undeniable. I've got both TLCW and TMAA on the 5 now so that pretty much makes these guys a top 10 band or close to it.

@TheBoneyKing — honestly I thought the same thing at first. That this was their worst. But this is a huge grower and now I love it. Just FYI because I know you haven’t gotten to it, but Strangers to Ourselves is also a grower. I now consider Good News to be their worst (still a 3.5 tho).
Spitting Venom is amazing and top 5 MM.

Completely agree with this — We’ve Got Everything, Fly Trapped, Education and Steam Engenius are pretty mediocre overall. That said, Little Motel is a fantastic song.

I'm near enough 100% with you on all that Larkinhill
This is a grower and the Modest Mouse you reach for when you want a more conventional, and I guess 'fun', hot weather indie pop sort of listen.
And 'Strangers' beats 'Good News' for me too

Alright - will try to hold back judgment for a few more spins, was almost ready to throw a hasty 2 on this but that's not my nature.

Yeah man, give it a few more shots. I was like you (not quite a 2 tho) at first, then grew to love it. Even Spitting Venom and Little Motel, which are my favorites here, had to grow on me. They weren’t completely immediate. It’s cool if you end up not liking it obviously, but give it a chance.
I will say I do not like Dashboard tho. March Into the Sea, Fire It Up, Florida, Parting and Missed the Boat Are all great though.

People as Places as People is also one of the best ones
rarely gets talked about

Great song, agreed. I think it just gets a bit overshadowed coming right after Venom, but it’s really good. That opening guitar line is one of my favorite moments on the album.

I know the rest of the song is pretty lame, but any love for the bridge in We've Got Everything? Always stands out as one of my favourite bits here

I've always enjoyed We've Got Everything quite a bit, but yeah this one was a grower for sure. Also agree with Spitting Venom being top tier MM
