eh, I mean there are positives, there are negatives. Reductive argument to say it “irreparably damaged society”

also the ‘damage’ in a lot of circumstances already existed / was manifesting, social media just highlighted it. All the bullshit out in the open. Which in better in some ways

I deleted my Facebook for good May 2020 because I realized I did not need to know everyone I kind of know's daily opinion on the pandemic/government

This is the big part of problem (? maybe not unanimously problematic, as Demo said, it can be beneficial in some cases I guess, even if underhandedly so, but—) social media has given everyone a "platform". Not everyone needs or deserves or should have a platform. Does anyone really need to know what your alcoholic Uncle Ron thinks about immigration policy? Probably not. C'est la vie.

for sure jrk. The wife’s FB is enough these days and she isn’t an extensive user either. I still have an account but haven’t logged in for many years now

I can’t be arsed with it

I deleted mine last year permanently, and made a temporary one this year to sell something on the marketplace. The shit Meta will try to press on a new account that has hardly been profiled at all yet is absolutely horrifying, and yeah plenty of (mainly older) people eat it right the fuck up

there are of course great benefits but it has undoubtedly driven people of all sorts deeper into their ideological shell who view people outside that as evil and basically irredeemable. i think that is extremely damaging and has been bleeding over into the real world more and more each year.

It is entirely responsible for this parasocial obsession with making celebrities definitively choose sides on political issues. Apparently they are not afforded privacy for their own beliefs like everyone else. I am very grateful not to be famous.

Social media was a mistake agreed. I disavowed pretty much all of it except Sput/Youtube/Instagram

it was much better when celebrities were these mysterious people you just saw on tv talk shows sometimes and didn't know much about.

Social media makes me puke, it always did, that’s why I’ve never had a facebook/insta/twitter/whatever account. The way people treat celebrities is sick, but truth be told, the mass got conditioned by the mid-famous dorks, who do nothing but abuse their wave(let) of fame. Why the fuck should any musician feel obliged to make statements of such complex issues? Anyone shouting from the dark at gigs is a coward and has obviously no insight about the artist’s background and personal context, nor having enough respect and decency to shut it up. Thom’s statement is spot on, it’s easy to judge from the crowd, but it must be sickening to be on the stage when you started your career with singing that you’re nothing but a creep, a weirdo.

Very rare for me to say these days but Fantano made a video about the topic and he absolutely nailed it. Very pathetic of him (Thom) to make it about his mental health and to not recognize a genocide, while he portrayed himself as a super progressive

who cares

too much pressure for them to have an opinion on anything and everything. People want too much from celebrities, yet they aren’t allowed to be vulnerable either

wouldn’t be surprised if Thom broadcast his opinion Gaza (late, apparently) just because he felt under pressure to say something

they don’t NEED to say jack shit

Obviously he did it to protect his bag. This all wouldn't have happened if he didn't react the way he did at the concert and just didn't adress the issue at all
