This needs more time, but currently I'm struggling to see what all the fuss is about - by that I mean either end of the polarising scale. It's just kind of 'eh' so far.

yeah for sure...In the end of the day, nothing on these guys is stunning...yet I tend to struggle with blackgaze's general trend to endless crescendos...so those cut riffs on New Bermuda are very welcome on me.

"general trend to endless crescendos"
Really? I haven't been keeping track of the genre well. That sounds more like post-rock haha

So this band did to blackgaze what Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky did to post-rock? the difference being that post-rock peaked before those bands turned it into crescendocore

(And I hoped I don't have to see that BMTH crap again, and oh wow, it is resurrected as Johnny's avatar.)

This is the packaged audio equivalent of That Lords of Chaos film.

* did to blackgaze what Mogwai, GYBE and Explosions in the Sky did to post-rock

There is no difference. Blackgaze peaked with early Alcest : )

"This is the packaged audio equivalent of That Lords of Chaos film."

This is SO wrong.

Heh, touché Ghandhi
In that scenario, surely GYBE stand in for Alcest by doing the same thing everyone hopping on board wanted to, but on a scale none of them could touch?

Yes. Though Mogwai were around at the same time as GYBE. They might have done it before them (see Hellicon and Like Herod)

I've never quite managed to get into Shoegaze and I usually like my BM orientated stuff to be either a bit off-the-wall in a progressive/experimental way, or lavishly 'enhanced' (diluted for some) by other genres. In short, why am I even listening to this? - out of all the things to combine with BM, shoegaze seems like it would be pretty low on my list of priorities. I may have been fooled by the odd bit of post-black and/or blackened screamo stuff I've heard recently, although I'm still putting the pieces together.
