"Watch sput fuck up and call this the greatest black metal album of the decade" It might happen... But at least this is the best blackgaze album of the decade for me.
"Because no other black metal release will even get a vote, saaaaaaaad" [2]

"yet there'll still be like 20-30 shitty 4/10 indie folk lps" & "...if sput had a varied staff roster ... we wouldn't have this problem would we now"
If I would be a staff, I would flood sput with BM and countless of ambient and electronic genres (including DUNGEON SYNTH), hahaha!

Paracletus might get a shot, but honestly I have no problem seeing Deafheaven over DSO as long as everyone understands and agrees this is not black metal but blackgaze.

They're quite useful I think; even though it's merely intellectual masturbation, we can't help but compare everything we encounter in life, and genre discussions help us comparing what's analogous.

Genre discussions can be interesting if they're respectful, because you can discuss some more subtle stuff.
If the music uses similar stylistic means to black metal, but carries a different spirit, then it isn't really black metal to some people. And tbh I think they have a point there, even though I wouldn't agree completely. Same with metal in general. Or Prog. Or Punk.
But too often people are butthurt so yea, often they're just cancer.

metal nerds conveniently forget how subgenres form and function because they think cognitively dissonant elitism is c00l.

We laughed at transcendental black metal in 2011, but it looks like Deafheaven are the ones having the last laugh now; Sunbather is an excellent record that reconciles black metal with George Clarke's more cerebral and abstract tendencies to create something that sounds fresh and exhilarating.
