Oh, where to start.

Regardless of this I'd have to say that the review was well written in terms of the language used and the way the ideas were expressed. However there was way too much POV in it.

Stuff like "Heafy's vocals are worse then ever" is merely opinion and IMO holds no place in a well written review.

Drr-hey! Reviews are all about opinions. This should be painfully obvious, but it seems as soon as someone writes a review contrary to somebody else's views, they start talking about how the reviewer has "too much opinion" or some other such nonsense.

You may not personally enjoy his voice but it's not as though he sings out of key or pitches etc.

The ability to hit a note is irrelevant if the tone of your voice makes children cry.

I also have to query your reluctance to call a band that you claim to be a blatant Metallica clone Thrash Metal. Is there any particular reason you won't? And if so what genre would you call them?

Because they're playing the same kind of radio-friendly crap that Metallica started playing as soon as they hit it big. Metallica haven't been a thrash band since Ride the Lightning.

If you (and everyone else it seems) believe he's ripping off James Hetfield, does that mean he's also ripping off Chuck Billy and Dave Mustaine? Or any other Thrash vocalist? Would that mean if I started a Bay Area styled Thrash band I'd also be ripping off those vocalists?

No, we're saying that Heafy is a Hetfield tone-whore. He's plagiarising Hetfield's vocal tone. You would have to be deaf not to recognize it.

Now admittedly they aren't the most original band out there but to call them blatant rip-offs is clearly taking it too far.

Do you really want me to bend your ear on this one? This Message Edited On 03.11.07

This album actually pleasantly surprised me. I find that this album really has its moments. I acknowledge that Heafy's vocals at times are similar to Hetfield's, but Matt's voice is deeper and just more pleasant to listen to, his rough scream appeals to me kinda. It reminded me of Darkane at some point. Heafy needs to work on some of his lyrics though, Anthem (We Are The Fire), Becoming The Dragon, This World Can't Tear Us Apart, and The Rising had cringeworthy lyrics. There was some GREAT lyrical material in here though, Unrepentant for example was killer.

Musically these guys know their shit too. They can wheedle out their notes pretty well, and they make sure to put it in the liner notes, too. The only complaint I have with the solos is that they are kinda mistimed. What I need to hear from these guys is a solo not for the fact that you can solo, but a solo because it fits and it works with the music. The riffing is pretty awesome and cool, I like that. I dunno, if these guys got rid of some immature things in their music and focused a little more on their songwriting, and a little less on being pretentious and wanting to be the next big thing in metal, they could have everything going. The only thing Trivium really needs to do is play what they want to play, instead of trying to play what a Metallica or Iron Maiden fan would like to hear from them. They combine enough styles, if these guys tried to make that their own niche and combine thrash/speed with metalcore they could pretty much become a great band, they're musically skilled enough to do it. I await their next album with anticipation, I think these guys actually hold promise.

In short, I don't see the beef you guys have with this album. They're young, they're a little immature, when they grow up a little they're going to put out some really cool stuff, mark my words. This is decent, now for something really good.

The complaint I personally have is everything you listed wrong with the album. It's pretentious, it's boring, the solos are there for their own sake rather than the song's, the lyrics are criminally bad, and it's a derivative rehash of everything that came before.

Yeah, if Heafy would pull his head out of his ass and grow the hell up they could make a decent album. The operative word being "if." But the guy is such an egomaniac I can't see that happening.

1) Steerpike, you've run your point into the ground. Is there anything you haven't illustrated about his album that you might dislike about it?
2) Why are we still arguing about this? If you have a point to make about the album, it's probably already been brought up in the other 44 pages of comments. No one is going to sway the other, this is obvious, so why are we still going on about this?
3) ...Steerpike still has a good point. OK done.

my comment was for altmer. i agree with steerpike as well that if matt tries harder to make music that fits them, they will be a lot better, and maybe gain more fans on this site

Have I mentioned yet that the drowning out of the bass in most of the songs pisses me off?
Anyway, he said he didn't understand our complaint. I took that to mean he didn't hear me the first 70-some-odd times. So as much as I hate to sound like a broken record...

Well, I do enjoy Master Of Puppets, so I may be partial. And yeah, the bass is kinda drowned out... but most bands I listen to (with the exception of Opeth and Dream Theater (on some songs)) also don't have any audible bass, I guess I'm just used to that.

Oh, and I love the title track more and more everytime I play it.

I really enjoy it. Then again, I am a Dream Theater fan, so I guess boring instrumentals are just my niche

I agree with altmer. This album really isn't as bad as people put it. Some songs are pretty crappy, like TWCTUA, and sadness will sear, and ignition, but the rest of the album is pretty solid. Detonation is a really good song, and probably my favorite here. Tread the Floods, to the rats, unrepentant, and becoming the dragon are also pretty good. I actually like the anthem a lot also, though the "woah" part is horrible.

The title track is pretty good, i just think it should've been half the length.

I only have two DT albums, awake and octavarium and i honestly like octavarium better, though that may be because of the title track. Awake just doesn't do it for me though. I haven't had it for long though, so that could change.

Then I'd rather not know what music you're listening. Honestly, the big no-bass-in-metal myth is incredibly overhyped. I listen to a great variety of metal and 90% the bass is audible. Maybe not as much as the guitars, but with normal audio boxes, at normal volume, it can be easily recognized.

Oh, and my first sentence was somewhat out of line. I have been on your profile several times to see what you listen to.
