I hear zero underoath here, for anyone who was waiting with bated breath for my take on that one, btw.

By Define the Great Line, I don't feel Underoath were very skramz at all. The skramzy album was The Changing of Times. If it meant you getting into more music that gave a similar feeling, then that's really important though. I only mention Underoath at all to say that the cleans specifically remind me of Aaron Gillespie's singing, which, in retrospect, are kinda cheesy, because I used to listen to scene shit a lot and then rebelled away for more classic or challenging music. It's honestly a very small detail in the bigger picture.

I feel really pissed for not liking No Gospel. Considering its duration, it's really lacking in hooks. The chorus doesn't feel replayable either. Bodega Head is where it's at.
In general this album is pretty diverse and interesting, and I'm finally fond of the cleans. I still kind of prefer clairvoyant I think, it feels a bit more.. substantial? Or more like to-the-point.

Hm. Well it gets to a point where we're sort of trying to split the hairs between skramz and post hardcore, which skramz is totally a sub of pxhc to me, but these guys are just a sort of amalgam of screamo and more tastefully implemented modern pxhc sounds from that era where post-hardcore and emo got way more influenced by important pop punk like blink and Green Day and that sound was just kinda valid and explored and most of the visible bands were just doing that pop thing to some degree. Yeah, I could see some influence here with DTGL. Particularly in the guitars, now that I pay attention to it. Like State Faults have always had a little bit of that 2000s emo in them. "Wildfires" off of Resonate/Desperate is one of their best tunes and it rips off January 1979 by mewithoutyou a bit but that shit still goes. I actually dig the scene vox on that one.
Edit: @PTRKoulou, I haven't said it yet, because I didn't wanna piss on the party but I think Clairvoyant is better than this too. Like, the drums were way more my speed with the chaotic, blasty, reckless abandon that they'd have and I liked the economic feeling of that more fat-trimmed, short-form thing that they did with it. In my case, this album is basically like they changed a lot to not go much further. But it's still really great, so I'm not hating.

Absolutely agree, I think they definitely have some substantial early to mid 2000s post hardcore influence in their music. I just think my brain has reached its capacity for enjoyment of cleans like this in heavier music. They’re well executed, the melodies are good, just tooooo much for me.

Yeah, I like my heavy shit with dirt and grime on it 9 out of 10 times. The scene kid vocals have lost their place in heaviness imo too, to the point that they may actively detract from something that may have felt perfect otherwise. Though, I still HEAVILY fw Yaphet Kotto's first LP and the vocals are whiney as hell on that. Maybe the production and the fact that it's older helps it maintain some of that rawness for me. I mean bands like City of Caterpillar do cleans too, but the mid range tone feels way more even and like not as piercing. It's just hard to pull off going from some crazy scream and immediately going into a head voice/falsetto type of clean vocal without it being jarring and the sounds somewhat not belonging next to one another lol. Kyo from Dir En Grey or Mike Patton could pull off some shit like that, but that's a completely different dimension of sensibilities than this shit.
