Yeah I saw that metal hammer list, it was genuinely pathetic and one of the worst lists I have ever seen. Absolute Elsewhere were ranked below Architects, Bad Omens, Babymetal, Electric callboy, Sleep token, Ghost, Gojira, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Spiritbox etc. And the Deafheaven record didn't even make the list LMAO. Absolute joke. No one should take mainstream metal media seriously anymore.

Go ahead and call me a fucking elitist or whatever, that won't change my mind. Metal media is worse for being so biased by popularity.

I can understand if these site contributors choose not to dig too deep into the metal bag because of the risk of labeling a fairly obscure album as "best of the decade" but, like, that list was clearly someone perusing the catalog of their nearest Hot Topic or the barren wastelands that is the media section of your local Barnes & Noble.

I'd bet good money that they just shoved a "give me a list of the most top rated metal albums of the past 5 years" prompt into ChatGPT and "curated" the list for about 10 minutes before posting. It just reeks of bare minimum effort.

I'm a Sleep Token defender. But having it on that list is pathetic.

Yea I think the band is overhated but they have no place there. This isn't even metal.

And again, the list is a joke but I agree on A7x and possibly on Bloodywood and Electric Callboy. What's funny is that the Trivium and Spiritbox albums they chose aren't even their best this decade.

Metal media outlets like Hammer are basically paid advertisers. You won't find a popular album they don't like.

"mainstream metal media"

not sure what mainstream metal "journalism" like that it's even for, 90% of people tend to stay away from metal anyway. unless maybe the hopeless tiktok kids who watch mayhem hello kitty edits and call themselves metalheads

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Sleep Token. The music is extremely progressive, and without a solid grasp of advanced music theory most of the songs will go over a typical listener's head. There's also the band's lore, which is deftly woven into their characterization, while their mythology draws heavily from H.P. Lovecraft's stories, for instance. The fans understand this stuff. They have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they're not just good, they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence, people who dislike Sleep Token truly ARE idiots. Of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the effortless agility with which the band seamlessly fuses Prog, Metal, Pop, Funk, and Hip-Hop, or how Vessel's vocal range puts even the most acclaimed opera singers to shame. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Vessel's genius lyrical storytelling unfolds itself into their ears. What fools, how I pity them.

Any time I see any metal opinions outside of sput, I'm convinced that metal needs to gatekeep more.
