I would like some more unfreshness from CoL soon please

I cannot remove the context of their wider discog to help this one's 'freshness', but if I could, then I would almost definitely be kinder on it
It was still enjoyable during the initial release period, I just didn't stick with it all that long (probably revisited every other CoL album since last hearing this in fact, except maybe the S/T and Raging River - which I guess shows where my priorities lie)
It's time to mix things up

I love this band but for some reason have never even given the self titled a single chance. What's everyone's take on it?

Solid. Inessential for less hardcore fans simply because The Beyond expanded upon its ideas and ultimately superseded it
It does have a slightly different atmosphere but not sure that’s enough to make it really stand out

The self titled crushes and just sounds like a more primitive/raw type of sound
|

yeah the self-titled is inessential, but mainly because everything it did well was taken a step further on the Beyond, which is extremely essential

'fair because adtf, the ep, and this one were all written in the same sesh'
didn't know this but makes sense considering that I adore all 3

Yeah their second album blows their first one out of the water imo, I'm prob not gonna revisit their first one very much at all (especially considering how insanely long/how much better every other album is)
Alright, one album left to go, jamming this later today then I can do an official ranking finally

adtf> but I like this better than I did on release

This being better than Salvation is a wild take, damn
I should probably revisit this now the dust has settled. I remembered it being still v good because it’s CoL doing CoL, but kinda ‘by the numbers’ for them. Impressively still decent. I just haven’t revisited because I’d rather hear their others yet again and it always gets left out of the equation

I mean, that’s fair and also unfair
fair to compare it to ADTF since of the same session, also unfair cuz it was of the same session. I would compare both (and the EP) directly and rank em by song personally.

This is like the middle of my list in their discog and its still a 4.5
Wtf is wrong with these guys

I’ve (kinda) given up comparing the big three. It was Neurosis first. Then I got into CoL later and put them atop that pedestal. Then, despite knowing them for a long time Isis appeared as if from nowhere and now it’s almost impossible to separate the three.
On the strength of their top 2 albums it’s a dead heat, I really can’t call a winner. Then it depends if I gravitate towards ‘best 3rd album’ etc. or the sheer number of quality releases. The massive nerd in me wants to work this out (with NUMBERS), but the answer will have changed in a couple of months anyway, lol
