Funny to see there was so much activity on this thread earlier today, by sheer coincidence I was listening to this beaut while out on a walk this afternoon. Album never loses its magic.

I did my top 100 recently - it's still top 5

Infected, OK Computer, Trouble Will Find Me, Kaputt and this. That Lambchop album is up there too.

I didn't give this a listen for awhile, came back to it and could've cried. It's such a bloomin' classic.

Hits like a truck.

They're all up there for different reasons...

'Infected' is for longevity, nostalgia and being my first love

'Computer' is there for the impact it had on me, technically incredible album

'Kaputt' for its atmosphere, its uniqueness

'Trouble' because The National have become my favourite band and that's their most meaty listen

'Is a Woman' for similar reasons to Kaputt

'Crazy' is the emotional devastator and most 90s sound ever

I've turned into a bit of a sput wanker and am tempted to put Miles Davis and Can in my top 3 but I think number 1 will always be

1. Spiritualized- Ladies and Gents

Nothing touches this for one to one connection though.

Doof I'm gonna guess 50 votes is the threshold for top 200 - this seems to float back and forth between a 4.4 and 4.5 average following that trend this should make it to the list once it reaches 50.

Personally this would make top 15 for me definitely, maybe even top 10.

My current top 3 (no definite order) are:

OK Computer - similar to Doof it's there for impact ('twas the first real classic album I ever listened to) and of course technical amazingness - it essentially defined what I look for in an album;

High Violet - essentially it's a perfect album, no song is much better than any other and all are perfect or nearly so, plus it's sad bastard Matt at his best and it's just so gorgeously lush, it's not as mindblowing as OKC but it does everything right;

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - my favorite Americana album, it brings more passion than anything else I've heard, and performance-wise it's just astounding

Thanks Doof, dan, ALA. Doof your top albums are great too of course!

Out of curiosity of my 22 5s (not counting a couple that jump in and out of the 5) the breakdown is (by my count):

8 obvious "classics", technically astounding fairly groundbreaking masterpieces

vs

14 more personal favorites/ones that are amazing more for their craft and emotion than for more technical reasons

It's clear from this that I favor emotion over technical quality.

I wasn't trying at all to make that sound like a bad thing, more I mean that it always seems like there are a lot of people here who emphasize how "interesting" an album is a lot more than the emotional aspect, and it feels like I run against that most of the time

I was curious to see what a statistical analysis would look like and indeed it confirmed that I go for emotion more often than not

It should be noted that the albums I counted as the obvious classics also have a large emotional element but that are equally notable for the technical/inventiveness aspect

Generally when I love an album for "technical" (hate that word) reasons but it doesn't do as much emotionally I rate it 4.5, the ones of those that make it to the 5 are those that have more emotional impact
