'the two albums after the resistance are somehow worse'
Which is quite the statement. The Resistance was so devastatingly bad that I couldn't bring myself to try anything after it.

Yeah this band took such a cliffdive
I mean they were already kinda flawed and inconsistent but jesus

This album is better than Resistance and anything that came after. This is still worse than Black Holes and anything prior, but...progress, I guess.

I also didn't think Dig Down was unbearable or anything. I'll never listen to it again but.. for a lead single it wasn't as cringe inducing as Psycho

Dig Down was pretty bad IMO

'already kinda flawed and inconsistent'
Yeah, I remember thinking OoS & Absolution must be the absolute pinnacle of music when I was a kid which is sort of ridiculous, oh how experience changes your perspective. They're really great records with some outstanding individual tracks but they've always had the capacity to release some sub-standard material. With The Resistance they took this a few steps further by releasing a whole album of bad/average material.

Absolution is a classic for me (mostly nostalgia) but yeah these guys nosedived afterwards, especially after Black Holes.

They seemingly embraced the absolute worst aspects of their sound and Bellamy forgot how to write a song, RIP I guess

'Absolution is a classic for me (mostly nostalgia)'
It was for me & then I ruined the illusion by listening to it again recently (first time in years). It was still highly enjoyable & definitely put a smile on my face but I do remember thinking I'd perhaps overrated it initially.

Absolution probably would've been a 5 for me if I was still 15. As it is I still enjoy about half of it, but I think OoS is a much more consistent album

its also funny that the drummer was always super generic and actually played like a drum machine, and now I'm pretty sure he has been replaced by one for the newer albums

My scores are constantly in flux as my tastes change. My general rule is if it was a classic to me at any time, it deserves to retain that score. Like Anberlin's Cities for example. I haven't listened to that in its entirely in probably 4+ years (maybe longer) but at one point it was a top 10 all-time album for me. If I listened to it again it'd be a 3.5 or 4 at best. Same applies to Absolution.

I sort of like that idea Sowing although wouldn't you end up with loads of 5s that don't really represent your current taste? I could probably allow Absolution to be a 5 though, it was my favourite album ever at one point.

Yes I would, and I do ; )
A glance at my 5's represent my taste over a decade on Sputnik; if I were to wipe my ratings and do it over it'd look quite different.

@Meat Salad - interesting you should say that because I absolutely adored OoS too but all these years later I actually enjoy Absolution a little more & believe it's slightly more consistent.
