Definitely better than Five Leaves Left even if that album does have my favourite Nick Drake song.

Five Leaves is definitely better to my ears. Which song is that Jamie? I'd say "River Man."

Time Has Told Me, which was the first Nick Drake song I really loved.

Pink Moon definitely stands head and shoulders above his other two albums for me though.

the trick is trying to listen to this without becoming extremely sad

Yeah, Time Has Told Me is a great opening track. As with Pink Moon, I just rarely find the "stripped down" sound works for me. There's that one glimmer of hope on the t/t with the piano adding variety but no, the rest is just a man playing his acoustic. Maybe if the songs were clearly more inspired, but I don't think so. Time Has Told Me, River Man, Day Is Done etc. are all equally good or better songwriting just with more sonic variety.

The album sounding so bare is what makes it great to me, being able to convey so much with so little

hanging on a star breaks my heart, now we're talking about non-album songs

time of no reply is well worth exploring

"The album sounding so bare is what makes it great to me, being able to convey so much with so little"

That's one of the main things what makes this better than his other albums.

It could be impressive in that sense, but his other two still convey more. Depends what you are referring to him conveying also. Pink Moon coneys melancholy and bleakness yes. A wider range of emotions not so much.

It's his best all round for me, for a variety of reasons, but the absence of the string arrangements is definitely one of the things that makes it superior.

See I don't get that, I mean maybe a couple songs were overblown but overall the strings added depth. I guess that's why I'm a classical/prog fan more than a folk kind of guy.
