I'd say their best instrumental is Stream of Consciousness tbh

The first 4 tracks are just as good as the rest wtf.
They're shorter and more catchy, but how on earth could these songs be worse? lol

Hm I can understand that Ocean but I totally enjoy all songs equally on here with Scarred being my absolute favorite and among my top 3 DT tracks in general and The Silent Man being the weakest one.

The Synthesizer at the beginning of Erotomania shows why Moore was so good. Nothing can withstand those simple but piercing chords. Classy af...

Ugh, currently on the 4th song of this and I'm not impressed, really not enjoying the vocal delivery as compared to the delivery on the second album. Instrumentally it's still great but the vocals are so distracting.

Absolutely, the man is amazingly good, one of my fave modern keyboardists.

Delicious album, but not the easiest to get into tbh. LaBrie has always been a devisive singer though, I think his most pleasant and technically sound performances are on Images and Words and his pre Dream Theater stuff. Unfortunetly Mike Portnoy pushed him into a harsher direction which helped fucking up his voice

Yeah it was a struggle getting through this, especially compared to Images and Worlds, the run from A Mind Beside Itself 1 through to Lie is fantastic and really stellar stuff. I hate the opener and innocence faded.
3 albums in and it must be said Symphony X has done the whole Powerprog thing better imo.

Do it, if you're into this kind of thing I can't see you not at least appreciating them Paradise Lost and The Odyssey are hard 5's for me and Divine Wings has done nothing but grow on me as I've aged and is close to getting the 5 bump. Excellent band.

"Delicious album, but not the easiest to get into."
I agree, not the easiest but still a great album. I always thought it always was an underrated album in their discography. Actually it's one of my faves.
"LaBrie has always been a devisive singer though"
Maybe true too and I always admired him. I saw Dream Theater three times in my country. They always give amazing live sets. Namely one of them was perfectly amazing. But it's also true that Portnoy always was the soul of the band. I miss him, really. He always knew how to catch the audiences.

@ Ground
I agree with kalkwiese. You must check them. I've been in one live set in my country and the concert was excellent. Besides those albums I think you must check too "V - The New Mythology Suite", perhaps their best album.

Its kalk that's not checked them or aha.
Their best is The Odyssey, V is 4th or 5th best depending on how I feel about it and twilight at the time. Fantastic album tho I agree.
Also Kalk don't bother with the set titled by symphony x, it's not good

Awake sound is like classic example of old classic prog sound, even its mix quality alone tells you a lot about it. They really tried to explore a lot of different directions on this album and while I hate innocence faded like if this song killed my grandpa, rest of the album hits you in a face after few listens. Give it 5-10 listens, if it doesnt work its not for you
Hell yeah, been to SX concert once, russel got insane vocals. V is their best, Divine Wings of tragedy is a little odd but it's really good once you get used to its sound (similarly to Awake imho), not my favourite but good anyway. Odyssey is just okey unless we get to title track which can only be rated 5/5. People tend to forget Twilight in Olympus but it's a pretty good album, it just happened to have weaker 2nd half and came out between 2 albums considered their magnum opuses.
One way or another, V is the best place to start discovering their sound which went into wrong directions from Paradise Lost onward (although even then every album still had at least 2 good songs)
