this is indeed good shit, but they have better. some songs aren't half as good as people are saying, like bring the sun, which i actually think is super boring until the latter half (toussaint l'ouverture)
still, this has a few of their best tracks in a little god, oxygen, and she loves us
where i think it falters is as an overall album. this doesn't have the same driving, singular aesthetic found on albums like the seer, which is also admittedly a little too long and bloated but more well-integrated; unified. because this doesn't work on the same level (for me, at least), it becomes impossible to digest in its entirety given the run-time, instead seeming more like a collection of swans songs, some far longer and more repetitious than anything in their catalogue, and others sidestepping that formulaic approach, adopting the same method of building on a song without making it tediously long (oxygen)
a great effort overall that pushes the envelope with some very interesting musical ideas, but it has nothing on the seer or some of their older classics like white light
