Pretty overrated band I've always thought - I've heard most of their big singles as well as this and Vitalogy a handful of times each (not for years though) and nothing ever really stood out for me.

corduroy, I have a very weird college story about that song

@ALA I feel the same about most grunge - as a genre it started out as slightly edgy radio rock and then just turned into radio rock. Maybe it was a "you had to be there" sort of thing but there are still legions of teenagers today who idolize Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc.

Ya boney. all the big three Pearl Jam, Nirvana, amd Soundgarden are overrated..

grunge was a very weak Movement of music, some good bands but was just classic rock basically with a more punk attitude from the bands, didn't move music forward much but recreated 70's hard rock, without the coolness. All that being said about 5 bands were good, and the grunge magnum opus Siamese Dream, can stand up to all comers

The singles are penetrated into your skull every day on rock radio, and they have been for the last 20 years or so. Doesn't really bother me too much, I just spin the whole record and I'm satisfied. Overrated band? Yeah, maybe, but I can't find any faults here. The only issue is I've fatigued myself listening to it so many times. As far as the big grunge bands go..it's kind of a similar plague.

I mean I've never given albums by them much time so maybe there are deep cuts I'm missing out on? Overall though it's just not a style/movement that seems to demand my attention overall.
|
| |
@wham, I thought the Smashing Pumpkins weren't really considered a full on grunge band? Either way though I've not heard Siamese Dream fully through (Mellon Collie I know and love though) they've got a lot more going for them and were way more ambitious/had more diverse influences than the other "grunge" bands.

You take some sounds of the 70's/80's add some punk/metal flair..plus the lyrical content was reaching out to all the youngsters.. folks ate it alive; I certainly did. I wouldn't say it was a weak movement, it certainly left a mark, and it's still there, very popular. That's the last big 'mark' in the mainstream I've seen. As far as the quality goes.. I was sick of it by the mid 90's but I still very much enjoy the classics so-to speak. Sometimes things burn out quickly, but oh I remember.
Reemed my favorite genre of music and converted a metalhead into alternative rock at the time, crazy!

Grunge is just alternative with punk and metal influences with poor production that's it
I still don't get how a song about two real life school shooters (one named Jeremy and the other was someone Eddie knew in high school) who kills himself is not depressing

I just see the grunge thing breaking out like how black metal gained attention. Just some bands who were making music for themselves with no intention for gaining any sort of attention and then all of a sudden the audience just starts growing in numbers to the point of becoming a phenomenon with the more interesting musicians in the genre only solidifying its popularity
