I do not get it. This does super little for me as far as atmosphere goes. Thereās some good riffage, and I honestly donāt mind any of the ārepetitivenessā, but by golly I just think it is bad. The vocals genuinely sound like a meme of bad black metal vocals to me. Like, those videos where a guy goes up to people in the line for metal shows and asks for people to do their best scream. And it definitely doesnāt get the āso raw it adds to the atmosphereā with respect to production. It just sounds not good. I compare them to a contemporary, Emperor (who Iām not really āintoā, but I definitely get it more), who I think actually can actually capture the raw, cold, and evil vibe of BM. Someone make me understand this record (or the two other big Darkthrone records surrounding it).
Also - never ever forgiving the Deafheaven hate after listening more deeply to the black metal OGs.

Have you heard A Blaze In The Northern Sky? If you're trying to get into early Darkthrone, I think that one's the best venture point, at least it worked that way for me.

Pitchfork: Blaze might be worth a shot even if you didn't dig this one. You probably won't end up digging it either honestly though. If you like dm Soulside is well worth a jam though and also my favorite album from them. If you don't enjoy the earlier stuff though you might get something out of their more recent releases. Definitely a ton of quality riffs on their most recent stuff.
I've yet to hear Deafheaven but am curious about just from the sheer amount of insane love and hate I see them get.

Thanks for the recs, combustion. Iāll try and jam more and see if I can get into any of it. If youāre going to listen to Deafheaven and youāre a Bm guy, I would recommend āLunaā. First half is classic riffage / shred, shows a bit of the atmospheric side with the guitar leads, second half is the post-rock-tinged stuff - to me, that stuff has the epicness of the classic bm, but itās much more melodically-major and triumphant. Let me know what you think
I just canāt get over the production and vocals on this, though. BM is definitely not my āthingā but I can get down with plenty of it. This just aināt it for me. Even compared to some of the other mid-90s artists and records (I like Emperor a lot more, Burzum a bit more, and Mayhem a little more (despite also pretty unacceptable vocals for me))
