Blues, rock&roll and avant-garde jazz influences make this album, but only a true genius could shake the popular music ground, Beefheart wasn't a strict musical genius, he was more of a genius in general, that's why he was a painter after his music career, a visionary no less. I'm truly convinced he got a good influence of Charles Mingus (the controlled chaotic orchestrations) and Cecil Taylor, the free aspect. Albert ayler probably too.
