One day this might be a 5. I really need to check out their later stuff, only heard the first 4.

I know, should really check that, I've done well to get this far honestly, there's just too much good metal (when you only started listening to it regularly about 6 months ago).

Although I feel like a real metal fan now I've changed my username/avatar thingy, haha. Edit: maybe over-compensating?

Damn only 6 months into metal huh? Those were the days lol. I've been jamming metal for like 12 years and there's still so much that I haven't heard.

I regularly listened to a few bands & that was it, also they were a bit of a random selection & I didn't bother to explore further at the time. I've only properly started exploring in the last 6 months.

I've been listening to Mastodon & Converge regularly for 10 years which seems bizarre now I think about it as they're not exactly gateway bands (talking about early Mastodon). I just liked a bit of metal on the side I guess, now it's the main dish.

I also listened to Dog Fashion Disco a lot which is even weirder, I mean how does one even get to DFD before virtually every other metal band in existence?

Actually, thinking about it I had a few other records but nothing I listened to a lot & it was often just one album. I got into the habit of buying random stuff & not listening to it.

How did you get into it then Hawks?

I started off listening to bands like Slipknot and System of a Down when I was like 13 then by the time I was around 14 I saw Opeth's video for The Grand Conjuration and a live Cradle of Filth performance and that's what got me into extreme metal.

Crazy to think that it's been so long now haha.

@Hawks - I would hazard a guess that yours is the more 'conventional' way, I just seemed to bypass metal completely as a teen. I did enjoy one SOAD album though which I jammed occasionally (Toxicity).

man metal was in me for as long as I remember. I grew up on MTV, and distinctly remember being excited when Metallica's "one" and Queensryche's "Eyes of a Stranger" came on. I've had my phases, but damn its been in me for my whole life. Always interesting to hear how other people find it.

Honestly, it didn't interest me at first, either I wasn't ready or just hadn't heard the right metal. Maybe both.

I didn't 'get' Nu-metal & wasn't a fan of Metallica (as prime examples) & that's what I was bombarded with as a teen. Other music seemed so much more appealing. Admittedly I should've started 10-12 years ago when I ventured out musically, considering I've been a Mastodon fan for 10. I do wonder why it didn't occur to me that checking other similar stuff might be beneficial, I sort of did I guess but not very thoroughly at all. Guess it just wasn't my main focus.

I have a friend who was raised a hard Christian and got that first itch from the heaviness of Creed as a 17 year old. Creed's heaviness led to the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack, which led him to Lamb of God. Then it was all over. I love hearing how people find it. Looking around at shows these days makes me so happy. Grizzled old dudes with Cowboys From Hell or Among the Living T-Shirts mixed with teenagers and its smiles all the way home. I often wonder if this kind of community is found in other genres. I feel like I'm instantly friends with a thousand new people when I catch a show.

Sounds cool, I'm kind of disappointed my musical journey is so uninteresting. It started with my parents, then music TV/friends (mainly Indie/Alt. Rock stuff) & after a while I just wanted something different...

Essentially mine can be put down to being disillusioned/bored with what was immediately around me & what my friends listened to, so I went out of my way to discover new things online, I guess that would never have happened without those initial steps.

The person I've met (in real life) with the best music taste is actually my mum & there's no way a teenage me would've accepted that, haha.

" I feel like I'm instantly friends with a thousand new people when I catch a show."

Pretty much the reason i love underground electronic music festivals summed up in one sentence. Well that, and dancing my ass off to my favorite producers while hanging off the side of giant sound systems.
