'on first listen I enjoy this much more than Dummy'
I can definitely see why someone would find this more immediately impactful.

Dummy is just way more trip hoppy/downtempo for better or worse. This is much more sophisticated in my opinion. I'm not the biggest fan of that early 90s Trip Hop sound. That's probably why I enjoy this much more

That hurts re 90s trip-hop but fair enough. This is incredible, so guess I'm easy either way where Portishead is concerned. This has more song-writing variety whereas Dummy is just smooth as silk and A T M O S P H E R E etc. Not that this doesn't satisfy some of the same cravings.
Then there's s/t and NYC, man what a band!

Does their self titled fall more in line with this sound or with their debut?

more like their debut for sure

Definitely the debut. It's a lot darker and more claustrophobic though.

They did cover ABBA's SOS in quite a similar vein as Third, so you could check that too. And there's Chasing the Tear, a standalone single which is super krautrocky, just like this one.
