Okay this is really great
but the ambient sections carry a lotta weight and I'm sceptical as to how well the metal disc works on its own
but combined is awesome ! cool !

guess I'm the weird one that still prefers the metal-only version.
I spin it combined every once in a while though. There's nothing like it.

Yeah was wondering if the general consensus was that the album is lacking if you don't listen to it combined, and if that might be because you first heard it that way.
I saw them perform live before I heard the album, spun the shit out of the CD which wasn't combined. fell in love with it that way.

I’d say the CDs on their own are pretty cool, but listening to them combined after the fact and hearing all the parts sync up is really cool, especially the additional drumming and vocals on Absent/Beta Aquilae. I had a nice stereo playing the first disc and played the second disc on a boom box, but syncing it properly took a few tries cause they had different delays from the time you press play to the music actually starting

Fuck this is v v v good, only on disc one so far but I generally like ambient more than post-metal so I'm optimistic that disc two won't suck?

Ambient disc is nice so far! I was worried abt some of the vox being on here vs disc 1 but they don't ruin it or anything, even if personally I maybe would've kept it all-instrumental

does someone actually listen to disc 2 on its own?

I mean it's listenable for sure but you can def tell that it was conceived as an accompaniment to disc 1

I've done it, but only because I felt like I should take a closer look at it since the aural assault of the combined version makes it pretty tough to pick apart.

There's not much reason to. It was written after the album as an accompanying piece, not like the missing piece of a puzzle. I don't think it's at all intended to be enjoyed as a singular experience.
