I have to struggle to like this album to be honest, because of Labrie's lyrics. I can't really ignore them, I think they're too simple.

^ LaBrie isn't the only lyricist in the band dude, in fact they all wrote lyrics for this album and he contributed the least. Petrucci wrote the bulk of lyrics on this album.

Well whoever did should have tried some more complex lyrics to match the music. I feel like this guy ends up sounding like a bad rapper on some tracks with his rhymes.

Well considering there are five different lyricists I think it depends on who is writing. I think Petrucci does write some great lines here and there, and Myung has always been a great lyricist, but LaBrie and Portnoy are pretty horrible.

Listening to Images and Words now, and it seems like it's worlds away as far as lyrics go. I don't get it.

Yeah they regressed as lyricists just as they regressed as musicians. Petrucci used to be fantastic (listen to Scarred for example) and now he's dogshit (Dark Eternal Night, Count of Tuscany). Another reason is that the keyboardist, Kevin Moore, who was Images and Words but not this album, was also a really good lyricist and contributed a lot to Images.

DT have never been great when it comes to song writing but the lyrics on here aren't that bad imo. Yes they're fairly simple at times but is that really that much of a bad thing for an album like this? It's better than being overly complex for complexity's sake. They get the concept across well enough which is pretty much all that can be asked for from a band who are pretty limited when it comes to song writing capabilities.

This has some really shining moments. Unfortunately after "Beyond this Life" the album never takes off again IMO (with the exception of "TDoE"). Some songs drag a bit ("Home", "Finally Free") and the ballads are quite lame, specially after much better slower songs like "Another Day", "Space Dye Vest" or "The Silent Man".
And I better don't talk about the lyrics. If you want really great lyrics, better get Opeth's Still Life. Better story, better lyrics, better vocals and no wanking.
Now I think about it, my rating is way too generous.
