I'm gonna somewhat agree with you, Man Made God, on the lyrics. I'm not a fan of preaching. However, I dont think the lyrics do that. Sure, there are biblical references and postive ones at that, but this is no where near a christian band or anything of the sort. It really all depends on what context you take the lyrics in.

I'm not a fan of organized religion, but when I write I sometimes use religion as a way to extend a message to people. Branch out so to speak.

And yes, they're are pretty dramatic musically. But it's also quite beautiful.

If someone could point me in the direction of some bands/albums that do great combinations of orchestra and rock music, that'd be awesome. Thanks.

I'd like to know of some bands like that myself. Lacuna Coil is kinda like Nightwish.

With their musical talent and her singing, I'm sure they have/could write some masterpieces.

To me theres a diffference between being religious and preaching. They seem to preach.

"Behold this fair creation of God". No un-religous band would say/write that line.

"Behold this fair creation of God" is from Planet Hell, which is about the way Human's are Defacing (for lack of a better term) the earth and also about the apolalypse. "This world ain't ready for the ark" is also in that song. I wouldn't consider it preaching, but merely using religion to get a point across about a potentially powerful subject. I dunno, that's just the way I see it.

Listen to the Wicked End (here you and I go with A7X again, hah) by Avenged Sevenfold. That song is full of religious references and refers to apocalypse. A7X is hardly a religious band. Same with a couple other songs off of WTF and COE.

As far as Lacuna Coil goes, I love their singer. The band sounds like it has talent, but I didn't see them really exploit it much. A lot of Comalies seemed kind of bland musically to me. But I'd say the definitely have potential.

Rock.

I in principle agree with everything you say there.

Comalies was definatly great, but it needed more variety. Something to set it apart. It failed there, it just was a "good metal album with a really talented female singer'.

I understand what your saying about religion being used to re-lay a powerful message. The only thing is, theres not 1,3 or 5 religious references in a NightWish album. Theres many. It's not like the best way typically to reach a "metal fan base" is by preaching or through religion.

I'm gonna to look into the band deeper though. Read some bios of them besides what they put up.

I gave this a try finally. I guess pressure does make people try stuff. lol.

I gotta say. I actually like it.

Nemo was amazing. I havn't listened to it all yet, however I thought the guitar riffs are extremly simple. Then again tarja's voice is so amazing... I think she's most likely the best singer of any metal band I've ever heard. Her voice is amazing.

I can't stand the guys voice though.

Anyone know who will assume full singing duties?

I hate Tarja. Someone way back when that she had such a way with expressing emotion, but also how classically trained of a vox she is. Well...she was TRAINED to be able to feign emotion! C'mon. Nothing in those songs they write really have any semblance on anything in the real world. Its fantasy metal. No emotion.

Although, some power metal vocalists can sing with emotion. It depends on the singer and if the content truely affects them emotionally...

But even past the whole argument, Tarja sucks. She tries to be unique but just enters the void of blandness.

Ugh..... Sir, Who do you hold in high standing in terms of singers?

She has a damn good voice. Yes the lyrics are fantasy based, most power metal lyrics are cheesy.

Shut up...

MMG: the "Fair Creation of God" line was sarcastic. Tuomas has said repeatedly in interviews that he's not actually a religious person; he just likes to use Christian mythology and imagery. If you really explore his lyrics, you'll realize that they aren't preachy at all. Marco Hietala has a song in his other band Tarot called "Pyre of Gods," which, if anything, is preachy AGAINST religion. Here are the lyrics:
On the legs of lightning,
the storm rears defeat
Rising in vain once more with the sea.
Grey hand's reaching, cold under the swell.
Withered in the forge of our unbelief.

All gods breed, all gods die, all gods will pay.

We'll exorcise all these fathers of lies.
Burned holes for eyes behold the pyre of gods.

Uncrusades, heretics to faith.
No slavery beyond death!
Every idol will feel our scourge
They can't hold us in this life.

All gods breed, all gods die, all gods will pay.

We'll exorcise all these fathers of lies.
Burned holes for eyes behold the pyre of gods.

The ransom of your soul must be paid for your dead
The way out for us all: We'll take the jailer's head.

All gods want, all gods need. Their sacrifices must bleed.
All gods breed, all gods die, all gods will pay.

We'll exorcise all of these fathers of lies.
Burned holes for eyes behold the pyre of gods.
I guarantee that if Tuomas or any other members of the band held serious religious convictions, they would not have been comfortable having him in the group.

Tuomas uses massive amounts of Christian imagery in Nightwish...it's hard not to believe he's a religious man.

Yeah but he states mainly and especially in his other band "for my pain" that he is the dark one of nightwish and is a gothic man...good on you tuomas goths rule!!

I was told that Nightwish had dumbed down their sound for Once. After listening to the first three songs I was in agreement but then I discovered there's a few corkers on this!

Can't beat Oceanborn though, sorry.

Nightwish did nothing of the sort. Once was the pinnacle of their artistic developments, IMO. It is the most mature, best written, and most daring (Ghost Love Score in particular, of course). The only "dumbing down" may have been "Wish I Had an Angel."

Dumbing down in the non super shred neoclassical riffing section, perhaps. Dumbing down as a whole though? Hardly. Some of Tuomas's compositions on this rival the greats of the Romantic era...they really do inspire emotions in you.

I wouldn't really consider anything they did before as"supershredneoclassicalriffing," though. I mean, when I think of that, I usually think more along the lines of Symphony X.

That's true, Symphony X does conjure up that image. But listen to stuff like Gethsemane, Wanderlust, and the ilk. Most of the guitar riffing on here isn't like that at all. But it keeps the music fresh, though, which is more important.
