I'm not saying he was the devil incarnate, or a total idiot. I am totally for decriminalisation of soft drugs, and think censorship of art is evil. Fuck Tipper Gore, and white Christian conservative values.

BUT

Even if you could conveniently write off every misogynistic and homophobic thing Zappa ever said as valiantly campaigning for free speech, that still doesn't satisfy. Free speech isn't about freedom to use harmful stereotypes and slurs. If you're going to be satirical and outspoken, get some better targets, jfc. Attacking queer folk and women isn't sticking it to religious, conservative America. That's actually pretty in line with their worldview. One step forward, two steps back.

Free speech is about the right to express opinions without fear of censorship or restraint. Using a slur isn't expressing an opinion, it is literally just insulting someone. If the right you are afraid of losing is the right to insult particular social groups, your priorities are all kinds of fucked up.

I honestly view Zappa as half offensive for the sake of offending people and half satire, kinda like South Park is

But he makes fun of everyone: women, gays, people of color, religious people, politicians, white people, hippies, the police, liberals, conservatives, drug users, musicians, himself...

Like it's not like he only targets women and gays, and it's not like he's actually against them. I feel like you'd have to be overly PC to not understand this... and when it comes to gays/women/people of color, he's in support of their rights, just goofing around and mocking outlandish stereotypes.

I'm gay and I understand that songs like Bobby Brown Goes Down, Sy Borg, and He's So Gay are all in jest. Zappa has already made it obvious that he actually supports the gay community ever since that one interview where someone tried calling him out as a homophobe.

"I honestly view Zappa as half offensive for the sake of offending people and half satire, kinda like South Park is"

Good point, Zappa is kind of like South Park hmmmm

Well I have mixed feelings on South Park (and Zappa it would seem), in that both are capable of fantastic satire, but also go for low-hanging fruit which is just kinda cheap and nasty honestly. There's nothing liberal about doing that.

Even if Zappa is "mocking outlandish stereotypes" with the full social awareness that they are ridiculous, it is unrealistic to assume that everyone who is exposed to your music is going to register that same sarcasm. It's why you shouldn't tell rape or race jokes or whatever... even if you are fully aware of the horrors of what you are discussing, there is a good chance somebody who is genuinely just an asshole is going to hear you and have their deplorable views / actions legitimised. I think artists, due to their platform, have much more responsibility in this regard.

tl;dr Zappa seems like a prick and it quells my enjoyment of his music unfortunately, especially when he does his edgelord offensive scatalogical phallocentrism in almost every song

Honestly if South Park even offends you, you might just want to steer clear of all satire.

Also do you believe people shouldn't even be allowed to say these things?

I love satire, when done well. You can be politically, culturally and socially satirical without relying on cheap shots at vulnerable communities.

People can say whatever they want, but they shouldn't be above criticism, regardless of how much you like their music.

Of course you should be able to criticize Zappa, but I feel like your criticisms are just inaccurate.

Like if you think Zappa was homophobic, or sexist, or racist or anything of that caliber, then It just seems like you've completely missed one of his major messages.

Honestly, as a gay man myself I completely enjoy every song he ever wrote mocking the gay community because A. I find it funny and B. and more importantly, I know it doesn't come from a place of hate.

" You can be politically, culturally and socially satirical without relying on cheap shots at vulnerable communities."

You CAN, but expecting every satirist to make sure they make sure their satire is as PC as possible is more ironic than anything.
