I will get my new turntable tomorrow and have received my vinyl of this one last week. Can't wait to spin it as the inaugural record for that new setup. Let's see if it can kick Gutvoid out of the DM AOTY pole position!

yeah, bro, the mix of progressive guitar stuff and song structures over that sinister Cavernous Death/Doom foundation hits different. I love that album, and the LP looks amazing too!

"If by OG you mean 'started in the early 90s', then no. That would be Gorguts."

That's a good callout though I think their inactivity is a big knock for this comparison.

Immo were 2 years behind Morbid Angel and 1 year behind Cannibal Corpse. maybe they're second-wave instead of first (Possessed, Death, Obituary, Autopsy) but it looks to me like Immo helped codify death metal.

^ Immolation are definitely 2nd wave. But yeah, it's usually the 2nd-wave bands that solidify (or codify, as you said) the already-pioneered genre. Kinda like what Judas Priest were to Black Sabbath

certainly the case in black metal so that checks out here. Immolation usually falls just outside "big four" lists...kind of like Immortal. the Big Immos. coincidence? I think not.

That’s a low bar, when the band has done much better, and recently.

It’s not even that, I feel like I’ve heard this a million times at this point from this band, and when the band has as many classic albums as Immolation does, it makes it hard to really care about when it’s “same shit different day” in a discography as big as theirs.

I don’t think it’s bad, of course. Just a bit disappointed.

Last album blew my pants off, however. Crazy how consistent they are, even with this being on the middle end for me

This one is up there with the classics for me for reasons I mentioned in the review. They never got stale, but the sound extra reinvigorated here imo.
