Yeah, i respect that

I can see her not using the power in her voice as much but i wouldnt say she sounds weak but maybe more restrained, which i think she does a good job doing here

I mean it's fine it's not even my biggest critique of the album though on the title track in particular she sounds really weird.

It’s alright to have a dissenting opinion lol. I can’t stand Bjork’s voice

Except I like Anna's voice. Otherwise Dead Magic wouldn't be one of my favorite albums of the last decade. The problem is that everything now has to measure up to it

I mostly compared it to her last album so maybe that’s the disconnect

Dead Magic has "demented witch covenant from the depth of hell" vibes but in a beautiful, haunting kind of way.

This has "wine mom just discovered her spiritual self" vibes and "oh, here are a bunch of features with artists that I like but don't fit with my music at all"

I think Ethel and Anna are a completely valid combo tbh. They make similar styles of music, though Ethel leans into more slowcore/americana vibes. I completely agree that her and Iggy Pop don't necessarily mesh well though lol.

To see things from the Reefa angle, I have the occasional moment here it does feel too self satisfied, too grasping and I guess too commercial...too 'stagey' even.

There are a few times the backing sounds like how I imagine the music for the stage show of The Lion King sounds....those drums and orchestration are not always my bag, very tame.

However...half of this material, say the best 40+ minutes, is insanely good. The rest is maybe a bit as I described above, but it's never jarring I just see it as a bit of framing.

I especially dig her voice on the t/t. Yes, it’s at a higher register than her typical singing, but it completely fits the song, and that howl around 4:45 gets me every time.
