i quite liked the first 2 records, and Peter's voice was offputting at first but i endeared myself to it (it's funny, Peter sounds fine to me yet I still can't get into Isaac Wood or Cameron Winter, go figure), my friends are loving this too so I'mma see how this does on me once streaming decides to un-shit itself
"It's hard for me to believe this intense devotion comes from anything else other than banding together against the majority of folks or "plebs" as someone in this thread has said, who are like wtf is this shit?" some people just like weirder-sounding shit, it's the same reason the Avant-Teen stuff has an audience. i thought that Shearling record was a tad meandering, but i GET why that's loved.

"yeah instrumentally this is fine… even great at times, but I’ve never in my fucking life been so turned off by a bands vocals."
Literally this

this is probably the most understandable case of others feeling turned off on a vocalist I like i've ever felt next to Jordan Dreyer of La Dispute - i think I like Peter for the exact same reason I like Jordan
there are names like Chester Bennington where I'm like insanely confused but nah i get it here

I totally get being turned off by the vocals... but I'm not and I can't quite explain why I'm not

it's strange i'm notoriously picky with vocals yet this one works
|

Respectfully, Dreyer is a trillion times more talented than this dude vocally and lyrically

they both kinda tap into the same overwrought dramatics i live for

anyways, yeah this was about on the level of Kao's other work for me, Sanguine suite was my biggest highlight

'overwrought dramatics' is literally the key. they're albums about high school. the drama is the point. but yeah it took me literally years to get into the vocals but it eventually happened

It’s just like, When I Say shows he can be a perfectly competent vocalist, how he goes from that genuinely pleasant sounding chorus back to his “normal” shout is insane to me. Like bro, you really think you’re doing something good here?
Just a basic shout delivery would elevate this into being a very good record. I just can’t move past it man

I really enjoyed 'Why Do You Do It?', when the vocals weren't quite as squeaky as they are now. Everything since then is quite unlistenable. Which is a dang shame, as I think the band has lots of good ideas musically and the songwriting can he quite good. But there's no getting around how terrible the vocals are.
