Perhaps the answer for Katatonia is to go all in on making a softer, stripped down album? Or maybe they lean more heavily into the metal/prog elements and make a five or six song album with a bunch of heavy, 7-10 minute songs? Maximalizing their sound in a particular direction seems like it would be a good idea. As I think about this more, the last three albums feel like they're trying to take everything they can do and mix it together without really doing any one element particularly well, and as such have wound up creating a boring album that lacks conviction.

Katatonia needs a Rick Rubin album.

Same, listened to it for the fourth time in full (with plenty listens of individual songs) and I think it gets better and better.

I thought about submitting myself to the same treatment but eventually talked myself out of it.

"That is called Stockholm syndrome"
this is a quality joke considering where the band's from

There is an album by Solution .45 called "Nightmares In The Waking State Part I" and it's also mid. Part II is better though

This is another quality album.
It really takes a lot longer to digest however than the last few albums did. It has a similar quality to it to The Great Cold Distance, in having a sort of monotone feel to it.
But as with TGCD, this one reveals the gems of each song with each listen.
Depature Trails funnily enough however would be right at home on the track list of Night is the new day, it has the same qualities of many of its songs, a dark moody chorus, yet in an uplifting way, the croon of the bends of the lead guitar before each chorus. Its a sublime tune.
Thrice is a monster track, and i just love the meanacing vibe of the chugging mid section, it is of an impending doom.
The Liquid Eye has a very unique chorus, and it becomes infectious with more listens, it has an urgency about it.
Wind of No Change at least offers something slightly new from them altogether. Just a very cool tune. It also shows how heavy this album is.
Lilac is so quitessential katatonia, and the outro is just beautiful music weve come to expect from these guys.
Temporal is probably the most typical Katatonia track on this, it rocks for me, i really love the chorus. I really like when Jonas chooses to use unusual melodies or unexpected ones, love how he sings the line 'cant wait to loooose you' in the chorus. Such a great tune.
Departure trails i already mentioned, could be on NITND, the section from 3:37 to the end is probably my favorite section of the whole album, that bending guitar lick and the final chorus.
Warden has a brooding verse, reminds me again of something from TGCD perhaps. I have a feeling this is going to become a bit of a quiet achiever tune for them, not so obvious one of their best but will get a lot of praise.
The Light Which I bleed, opens much like their cover of night comes down by Judas priest and creates a very cool mood with its descending sort of motif. Really like its feel.
Efter Solen, remind me a lot of Sold Heart - which i think is a beautiful song. This is very similar and has a great pay off at the end.
Speaking of great ends, In the Event of has an awesome outro, giving it a real gravitus, powerful crushing end, the line 'mothers waiting in rows for the shadows of children' repeated over a double kick and wailing guitar climax. So good
Awesome album

It's not a terrible record, but there's nothing new here that they haven't done better on previous releases. If you want more of the same here you go, although I would personally argue there is a dip in quality songwriting on this.

theres been nothing new on the whole last three albums lol
also idk if i even back that theres nothing new here when efter solen is pretty distinct even amongst their slower tracks, but efter solen is also unfairly better than the rest of this

hey thats more than the last album's zero!
also they havent done anything like the choir used in wind of no change since like sanction, and even then those backing choir vox were much less present, so like two songs

Back half is ok but overall this is really dull. Wind of no change is especially bad

Quite a range of mixed opinions on this - I don't know whether to check this out or not. I like a lot of the band's stuff but if it is essentially a rehash of ideas on previous albums I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it.
