This has been described as Salsa TKOL and the TKOL part i agree with, but unfortunately the Salsa and/or Latino influence is very minor unfortunately. through i dig this, considering upping my score a bit

injustice is getting this instead of the new deftones

Nomos mentioned Phil Collins and i do see that hahaha
Especially something like The Iron Rose, with those ominous drums and Cedric's emotional vocals

Tbh i only want Deftones to release something if it's really good. So they can take their time if they want

"This has been described as Salsa TKOL"
I can kinda hear that haha. Maybe it'll get underdog status like TKOL did too.

I think the songwriting is really solid overall. Could maybe use one or another chaotic moment like in the old days, but this is for sure a bit underrated

Agreed. The more I listen to it the more I like it. This is gonna sound slightly pretentious, but i feel like so much music now is super disposable and this album is one that rewards repeated listening and finding cool lil' details in it. That said, it could use a bit of a kick in the arse 3/4 of the way through.

You guys are spot on. The album is structured in a really interesting way that rewards repeat listens, but the restrained slow burn is frustrating when it never really boils over like you want it to.

I listened to this again last night. I quite like it but man the drumming is dull in a lot of places, which is messed up because the new drummer rips, and mars volta always have killer drum parts.

Really? I mean yes they always have really zaney and intricate drumming, but the newest drummer seems like a letdown compared to the insane drummers they had before

She rips live, I definitely prefer her takes on Jon's parts more than any other drummer they've had since tbh. Her parts on this are pretty restrained though, if they ever get back to writing more uptempo or intense music she could totally pull it off, but I doubt they'll be back in that mode any time soon.

Yeah she's very good live. It's a shame they got her playing such limp parts on this record.

Does anyone else think of the Grease megamix (from the film) every time he sings "you're the one that i want?"
Then think it might be related to scientology because of john travolta? Or am i just nuts?

Forgot this came out this year. What a disappointment

I really like it. however the mixing could use a kick in the ass. When the record finally kicks off, all the cymbals and high end is pushed so far back into the mix it loses any impact it should have.

I totally forgot about this album.
Will listen before my year-end list.

Haha I guess that is the very problem with this... it is kinda forgettable.
It turned out to be m< second most listened to in Spotify Wrapped, just because I kept insisting, being sure at some point it would click. and it just didn't.
Weakest TMV Album for me.
