Really well written review. I might write a counter review, definitely feel more positive on this, somewhere between a 3.5 to 4.

I went into this pretty open-minded on release day but holy fuck it's so much worse than I'd have imagined. Talked about it in another thread but every time a song starts off well the shitty choruses kick in and you're hit with cringe-inducing lyrics that are impossible to ignore.

I'm thankful that I'm not the only one. This album sits at a 1.71-ish rating for me and I don't foresee the score improving with time.

This sums up my thoughts. I had zero expectations for this and ended up not hating it

my bandmate is all over this album and loves the reunion stuff more than all the pre breakup music. While I don't agree I appreciate his perspective and I think it helps me appreciate stuff like this, knowing it is subconsciously influencing our writing
I will not be telling him you guys think his taste is trash because he already knows LOL
|
| |
it’s gonna be as trash as his writing unfortunately

I commend you writing this much on this album, you are far brave than I lol
Seriously though, nice review

It's just fun. Has a lot of elements of the old Underoath, along with some new surprises. Aaron's drumming is fantastic here. I like the BMTH-esque experimental/electro pop stuff they've thrown in here (seems to be the main reason for the strong negative reaction by people here, along with the lyrics, which have always been bad with this band, and are largely irrelevant for me in heavy music in general).
The biggest thing for me here is that the musical motifs, chord progressions, and general style that I associate with this band are largely present here. It sounds immediately like and Underoath album, and even the electronic bits and modern nu metalcore stuff they are doing is reminiscent of some of their experimental tracks from their older material. It sounds like them. And that sound is what made me such a big fan of them all those years ago. So it's hard for me to hate this album, even with its faults. And some tracks are just good all the way through imo, and won't be leaving my playlist for a long time. Loss, Outsider, Cannibal, Spinning In Place, And Then There Was Nothing, even Teeth has grown on me.
