because guitar wankery/complex riffing is not obligatory for guitar music to be good

Still wondering what makes this good tho, apart from the things it is not.

Must be good in its genre, which I'm not into that much

It's a good deathcore album and people are hyped because the band kept their promise of going hard. In a vacuum, it's an average album regarding riffs, creativity etc. Certainly closer to a 2.5 than a 3.5 for me, but I liked their early stuff when it came out and this is more of that, with better production.

DePlazz I agree, not understanding the hype on this album. It feels like they went heavy for the sake of being heavy but it’s so bland. Literally the first 8 songs on this album sound indistinguishable from one another. The last 2 songs finally get a bit of a change up and are solid but can’t save the album.

It’s a wall of noise and not in a good way which is partially down to the production. Like others have said, the production is super thick which makes it hard to make out what you’re even listening to at times.

I love the insult of referring to this as metalcore instead of deathcore whether it was intended or not

Agreed on the 2.8 or so rating for this one.

Heaviness is not always about playing loud and having a good production.

I'm listening to Aborted as I'm typing, great example of a band that knows how to build/release tension and keep the listener interested.

I think people are hyped on this record cuz it's an OG deathcore band putting out a quality record that's better than the vast majority of younger bands and shows maturity compared to their earlier albums in this vein. This also isn't an overproduced fake heavy mess like most modern deathcore. If you weren't a fan of the genre before, it probably won't change your mind. This is like a love letter to us old/grown Myspacecoreheads

Production is unlistenable, but this is Phil's most brutal and interesting performance yet. I really expected this album to be full on heavy after the two previous ones which to me were excellent. This is fun but way too familiar.

Agreed with JR. Sounds like a lot of people just don’t like deathcore to me
